Thanks for taking the time to respond.
No ad blocker. Several minutes, maybe 10 to 15, but I wasn't timing it. In an attempt to use more RAM, I had many of the tabs playing 4K video trails from hd-trailers.net This was not a rated review; hence, we did not give it a star rating. The RAM testing was meant to be anecdotal; I apologize if that wasn't clear from the copy.
I understand that it was an informal test.
For future reference, Firefox has a cool feature: if you type
about:performance
into your address bar, you can see the CPU utilization and memory consumption of different tabs. In Chrome, Shift-Esc will bring up the task manager. In both cases, you can click the column heading to sort by memory utilization. I expect you'll find that playing 4k videos doesn't use as much memory as you think, while you might be surprised how much RAM is consumed by simply browsing sites like tomshardware.com - especially the article pages. I should add that I'm only basing this on my PC-based browsing experiences - my own Pi is too old and slow to be provide a usable browsing experience.
Also, note that modern browsers
tend to unload inactive tabs, in order to conserve resources. Because of this, browser tabs might not be the best stress test of memory usage. It's not fool-proof, as recently I had Chrome pointed at this page.
Even while the browser was minimized, it used over 4 GB of RAM, triggering my desktop to run out of memory and kill Firefox (yeah, not even the browser at fault), before I noticed.
Using separate, open browser windows might be the way to go. I'm not sure if open browser windows get unloaded as aggressively as tabs.
The ultimate question that any review needs to answer -- and though this is not a rated review I did try to answer it -- is whether one should buy the product. As I said in the article, the answer really depends on your needs.
As
@rugupiruvu pointed out, compiling software (especially C++ code) is a use case where people are likely to significantly benefit from > 4 GB. Might be worth keeping in mind, for future reviews.
Anyway, thanks for the review & thanks, again, for the reply.
