I have an old sony vaio that ran Windows Vista and it had a 40pin connection to the ssd. Is there any way to convert that to sata?

Solution
Can you take a photo of the connector and show it here?
40pin is normally for laptop 2.5" IDE drives.
There are connectors to turn this into sata but it's going to be hard to find one that will still fit into the trapdoor.
Do you still have the original disk?It could be that it has the connector on it and it could also be that the connector can be removed to be used again.

Is the goal to install a SATA drive in the laptop and use it , or merely recover data from the drive? (For the latter scenario, I'm reasonably sure there is likely some sort of USB adapter/external docking station that accepts a few IDE form factors...; the first of the two scenarios is a 'no'.

As fzabkar already noted this is a pata zif/flash card and it's pin compatible to IDE meaning that it's very easy to connect to any PC that can read ide drives with a simple connector.
You could daisy chain this to a ide to sata connector.
