I've an old PC that needs the system re-installing. Don't have the original
cds, but have a version of 98.

Do I need a Startup disk, if I want to wipe the old system off, and
re-install a new system. Or is there some sort of command.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

With Windows 98 I always found it easier to create a startup disk, copy
format to it, boot from the floppy, format the hard drive, run the CD and
install.

Could you let me know how to create a disk, copy format and format the HD?

Can one not do this from the 98 CD?

Many thanks

Tony,

If your computer can boot directly from the CD, yes, you can do everything from
the CD.

If not, go to www.bootdisk.com and download the executable program image needed
to create a bootable Windows 98 install floppy.

From the DOS prompt, the command FDISK is used to create hard drive partitions.

The DOS FORMAT command formats a partition.

You did not say if the computer has 98 on the HD now.

Second, your unclear as what you want. But it does not matter.

You can do a either do a clean install which will wipe your hard drive leaving
only the OS but no programs. You better have every floppy and disk ready for
reinstall.

OR

98 lets you "overlay" the new install over the old install, repairing and
replacing what is needed to make 98 stable again. Doing this should retain your
old programs and data.

Of course a dirty install it does not fix any registry problems.

Consider a dirty install to be not unlike a mother's "spit bath" of her
child. It may work, but the end result is really no cleaner :)
