I keep seeing the icon on my tool bar of the microsoft
download updates. I have installed. The icon keeps
showing up and the same updates are shown downloading all
over again. How can this be stopped?

Hello Pam,
Which same update(s) are / is involved? It just may help to know that.
(btw, I'm assuming you are referring to Windows Automatic Updates ).

Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder.

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

If Windows Updates or Automatic Updates prompts you to "reboot or restart" the system, do that: save your open work, close your user programs, then select YES to restart the system. Failing to restart has been known as a cause of your problem.

look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them.
