Really high ping only when playing BF4.

My problem is that I have random intervals of time where I have terrible ping rates only while playing Battlefield 4. I'll choose a server and start the game with decent ping around 50-70ms. At random times it will just sporadically anywhere from 50-999ms. This obviously makes the game unplayable.

I have tested with speedtest.net and pingtest.net and show decent ping rates while the game is not being played. I have verified that I am the only one connected and using my internet service at the time.

I am connected via wireless G and previously have had no problems. Is there a chance this could stem from a bad wireless NIC or router?

have you tried in your anti virus and firewall to place an exception for the game or for when your playing a game put the anti virus on gaming mode??? on the wifi dongle have the newest firmware and driver and have power saving mode off?? on the router does it have the newest firmware too???

Yea, I've checked into all that first. I'm wondering if its just down to unstable ISP connection right now. I mean, this just started about 7 hours ago. I gave it a break and nothing has changed. I haven't tried any other games, yet. Speedtest.net and pingtest.net are still pretty consistent with the 50-70ms of ping as well. I'm just thinking it was maybe putting too much of a load on a device, but that doesn't make sense if its loading youtube videos just fine...

No one else seems to be having the issue in game either.

if it just happened it could be a bad gaming server between you and the game. have you tried power cycling the modem and router see if anything changes. if not have you tried another game server???

I've tried all of that too. Anything other suggestions? I could just be impatient and not wanting whatever out of my control problems to pass.

the only thing i can think of without looking at the router is heat issue with the router under load. I would see if a friend has a spare to see if it the router or the dongle.

That will have to wait til tomorrow. I actually have a router/modem combo. Its very possible that it could be getting too hot. We've had one quit a couple years ago before due to blown caps. Thanks for the troubleshooting anyway.

I don't know the internet plumbing well enough to explain it, but this is a tracert ping from Roseville, CA to SOC's server in LA.

I can't play due to rubber banding today so I started investigating.

Anyone got any explanations?

Network congestion, server issues, ISP issues, faulty NIC, poor QoS. These are all contributing factors to poor connection. My original problem was that I was having huge lab spikes while only playing BF4 and everything else was fine. Until I tested other online games , I thought my NIC was dying.

DICE still has a lot of updating And optimizations to deploy. This includes network optimization. Just keep trying various servers until you get a good connection. Try to find the closest servers to you for possible lowest latency.
