Hey so last week was birthday and I bought an r9 390 to replace my old gtx 660. When I first but it in and installed the 15.7 driver, GTAV ran great. Then as I was switching games, the computer crashed. I read online that there were driver issues with 15.7, so I used DDU to uninstall, and then did a new install with 15.8. The crashing seems to have stopped, but I max like 30 frames in GTAV and the quality is bad too. Everything is maxed, but it looks like its turned pretty down. I tried Borderlands 2 and the quality looks good, but the frames drop to about 20 during combat. I thought maybe my FX-6300 was bottle necking the GPU, so I used afterburner and saw that it was getting pretty used up. Not always at 100%, but I thought I'd try upgrading it. Today my new FX-8350 showed up. Before I put it in, I put back in my old 660 and made sure that was still working. Once my PC was back in it's original working order, I put the new CPU in. Once I got that working and made sure it was working properly, I used DDU again to uninstall the nvidia drivers. I put the 390 in and this time went straight to the 15.8 version.

GTAV still runs terribly as does borderlands. I tried skyrim and that ran decently but it still seems like it should be better.

I used a power supply calculator to see if my PSU was too low, but I got a minimum of 525W and I have a 600W.

Here's my full system:
Mobo: msi 970A-G46
GPU: r9 390 8gb
CPU: FX-8350
PSU: Corsair CX 600W
Ram: 2 x 4gb ddr3
storage: 128gb SSD, 1TB
OS: WIn 7 64bit

Solution

yes, as the mobos would have different drivers

if you dont re-install or run fix installation you would get issues

Remember when changing your mobo there are certain preperations to make of your hard drive otherwise you will have to reset it.
Also when I upgraded to windows 10 most of my games got a 50-95 fps hike and some games run lightning fast on ultra.

I'm not opposed to just resetting everything. I can put some important things on an external hard drive and start over with everything else. I was reading an old thread and it said after putting the motherboard in, install the OS and answer the questions to do a fresh install, and this will erase my hard drives. (I have a HDD and SDD)

If I wanted to take this route, do I need to do anything prior to taking all my components out and installing the mobo? Also, will my previous Win 7 disk work for this? Or will I need to buy a new copy of windows? Lastly, does the fresh install wipe everything on its own?

i would format the OS disk (preferably the ssd) and do a clean windows install. OEM versions of window 7 are mobo tied .even so, microsoft may give you a new key if you claim mobo failure. prior to installing the cpu to the new mobo you should first clean the cpu cooler with isopropyl alcohol and apply a new layer of thermal compound.

I'm a little confused by what you mean. I'm sorry I'm so ignorant on this subject. I've never upgraded a motherboard before. This is my first computer that I built and I've never had to put in a new mobo. Currently, I haven't taken any components out of my PC. So I have my computer in the state that it is in, my new motherboard still in the box, and my OS disc. Do you think you could give me step by step instructions on what to do? I know that's a lot to ask, but it would be super appreciated. Everything I've read on line makes it sound so damn complicated. I just wanted to see nice graphics man

there are various windows lisence policies. check your windows 7 sticker. looks this

I don't know if your whole post is showing or not, but what do you want me to do with the sticker? And I've put the cooler in before, and know how to install all the components. I'm just confused on what I'm supposed to do with my hard drives and operating system when putting a new mobo in.

dont plug in any hard drives other than the OS one at first

after windows is completely reinstalled turn off the computer, and plug in your other hard drives

no need to do anything to the hard drives

you lost your windows cd?

as long as you have your original serial number you dont need to buy it again

yes, as the mobos would have different drivers

Solution
Alright the motherboard is in. I updated to windows 10. Everything seems to be a working and I'm getting 60+ frames on everything I've tried so far. Thanks for all the help everyone. It was a long process, but it was worth it

I had the same problem with my 390...turns out if you have NVIDIA physics not on low it's framerate drops.....mine was ~35 fps with it on max settings 1440p but when I turned it on low (you dont really see a difference) my framerate went to ~60 with no drops at all
