Really Slow Upload Speed

So a few days ago, I got a new internet service. They sell it as "symmetrical"; same download and upload speed, and they are almost at the same speed.

My question is, why is my actual speed when uploading things so slow? I get like 20MB/s when downloading from Steam but I only get like 300KB/s when uploading files, which is like 3Mb/s and not the 145Mb/s Speedtest shows.

I tested with various sites though, including Mediafire and testmy.net/results. This is what testmy.net is giving me:

which is consistent with the speed I am getting when uploading to mediafire.

Could be any number of things. Your first test I would guess was completely within mexico. The second test you went international to the US. All a speed test tells you is how fast it is to that site. Different paths in the internet as well as different servers on the end all make a difference. You can't even trust a site to be in a single location with all the visualization going on. Part of some sites are replicated and parts are run centrally.

The only way you will get a true test is to control both ends. There are a number of speed test software designed to test within a private network where you load software on both clients. Best would be to get a friend who you can test to and see what you get.

You also have to be very careful of what a ISP says in their advertisement compared to what is written in the fine print of the contract. I know a number of cable companies that sell "turbo" but all that does is allow you to run faster for a tiny amount of time...pretty much just enough time to get very high scores on the speed test sites.

If you think that is a problem, then look at mine, I want your speeds but the Mrs thinks "Watching TV is far more important than how quickly I can share/send or download stuff" and to be honest, it took me off guard, I just mumbled rubbish and turned my headphones up, yep, I am a sad geek and proud of it

TalkTalk are actually paying for a bandwidth for the trunk lines so you actually get 11mbs, you can have an isp giving you 1gbs but if they can't pass it on it's useless. he seems to be getting 3.5mb!

Isp's are known prioritize speed tests.

Sorry for the bump, but some people can't even get barely decent internet and pay double the amount that you do, whilst living in towns very close to large cities.

It took 30 minutes to upload this 30 kb picture, and I'm paying 150 dollars for the cabling installation into my house and then the plan itself, which is 200kb/s download and 60kb/s upload. Cabling wasn't even installed, the installer simply flicked a switch inside a box at the side of the house and we're paying monthly for that. If we weren't paying for that stupid shit, we would have a MUCH better plan than we do now.

My speedtest results were very good but when uploading and downloading it took hours.
I FINALLY found the problem after several years and wanted to share this with others who are having slow upload and download speeds but accurate speed tests.

If your modem is hooked up to a router, first unplug the modem from the router (ethernet cable) and try to upload or download by going directly to the modem bypassing the router. If your speeds are good. The try the following.

Plug the router back into the modem with the ethernet cable.

Go into the router settings using your browser. Enter the IP address in the address bar at the top (no need for www. or anything but the IP address). Then enter your user name and password. (Google to get the routers IP or call the company and they will give it to you. Most routers will still have the factory default user name and password since most people don't change them.).
Find the advanced settings or features (Western Digital's terminology) somewhere in your settings and turn it OFF Fastrack Plus QoS or FastrackQos. No need to create filters, etc. Or Google your router's model to get a manual to find the Fastrack QoS setting area in the software. Once saved it will reboot your router, give it time. Then try to upload or download. It worked fantastic for me!
