Reason for overclocking

I've been reading a lot of these forums and watching a few reviews recently and have noticed that a lot of people are overclocking these days.

In gaming I have never really seen the need to overclock, and My computers have always performed well under the stresses of 3d rendering.

What real world problem does overclocking serve? other than to beat the benchmarks.
