Reboot and select proper boot device error

Hi all,

I am having an issue where after POST, it says “Reboot and select proper boot device..” after resetting BIOS settings to default (to try and rectify another issue).

I have tried playing with boot order settings and have disconnected all other drives. I have confirmed the boot SSD works fine by putting it in a caddy and connecting it to a lappy.

I have cleared CMOS

I tried fixing it with the Win10 disk

Not sure what else to try and I really don’t want to have to reinstall Windows. I have read about switching to legacy support but my UFEI does not have this setting for drives, only for USB.

Specs:

MSI Fatal1ty gaming k6

8600k

Crucial 128* GB (it’s a little old now)

Thanks for any suggestions

Solution
I would leave PXE alone as that is for booting off network drives
I am not exactly sure what Video oproms do so I would leave that as is. It might be the graphical user interface used in bios itself. Consensus seems to be to use UEFI oproms when running win 10

I assume after you cleared CMOS you set bios to defaults?

CSM is what chooses between legacy & UEFI boot

knowing what format drive is in would be great place to start
boot from installer
on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose command prompt
type diskpart and press enter
type list disk and press enter
You’ll see a table listing your connected disks. If a disk is GPT, it will have an asterisk (that’s...
on the boot tab in bios, is CSM mode enabled? It should be by defaiult
what is Launch Storage Oprom policy set to?

Launch Storage OpROM Policy
Select UEFI only to run those that support UEFI option ROM only. Select Legacy only to run those that support legacy option ROM only. Select Do not launch to not execute both legacy and UEFI option ROM..

Page 93 of your manual - http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/Manual/Fatal1ty%20Z370%20Gaming%20K6.pdf

its likely you want UEFI as I think “Reboot and select proper boot device..” matches Legacy boot method

Hey Colif. Thanks heaps for pointing me in the right direction. I wonder if you could help me a bit more. I played with those settings by going all legacy and then all UFEI with no luck - I honestly dont really understand them 100%. However, I managed to boot by disabling CSM all together. It says you are not suppose to do this.

Is there settings you recommend for:
-Launch PXE OpROM Policy:
-Launch Storage OpROM policy
-Launch video OpROM Policy

Kind regards,
chris

Solution
Thanks. I did my research and understand it now. I will enable CMS and give it a go enabling UFEI again.

what I dont understand is: how come clearing CMOS/loading default settings gave me settings that didnt work when the board worked as is before (without me changing those settings as I didnt know what they were).

anyway, thanks again

EDIT: Simply cant get computer to boot with CSM enabled.
