Reboot and select proper boot device - need help

Motherboard: GA-Z170XP-SLI
Cpu: i5 6600 3.2ghz
Windows 10
HDD: W10ESEX 1tb 7200 64m

I just built this PC on Saturday and everything went well until this morning. I booted the computer and it gave me the "Reboot and select proper boot device" message even though for the past four days turning the computer on went directly to the windows 10 sign in page like normal. I looked the message up and read that many people solved this by reinstalling windows on their pc which is what I did because I barely had any files since it's so new. Now I am worried that I will run into the problem the next time I shut down my pc and turn it on again. Is there anything I can do now that the computer is running to ensure that this won't happen again? Thanks.

Ensure whichever drive you installed the OS on (SSD? HDD?) is selected as boot priority #1 in the BIOS.

The os is on a hdd, and when I was first getting this message my odd was boot priority 1 but even when I made my hdd the first boot priority I was still getting this message. Also on the bios page it lists my odd as P2 and my hdd as P3, is that because I have them in the second and third port number on the motherboard and does that matter?

Shouldn't matter, although having them in slots 0 & 1 probably wouldn't hurt (most boards are labelled 0, 1, 2, 3 rather than 1, 2, 3, 4)

Strange you're still getting the message, sounds like it's either not installing correctly, or the HDD is potentially dying. It's worth running a health check on the drive, as there's no sense reinstalling the OS to an HDD that may not last. Back up your data ASAP just to be safe (no guarantee the HDD is dying at this stage, but better safe than sorry).

p2 = port 2, p3 = port 3 so that is why.
Now what port you put the drive in, and what the boot order should not be relevant unless you have a very dumb motherboard.

Most modern motherboard have 2 areas that you have to select boot order. There is the general boot order (hard drive group, cd group, removable media group), and then there is a separate configuration point where you select which hard drive you want to boot. Your hard drive on p3 should be first to boot in your hard drive group, and hard drive should be the first item in boot priority.

Also have a usb thumb drive or hard drive can make the motherboard re-assign boot priorities while it is plugged in.

When I shut down my computer Tuesday night, right before powering off it said "something went wrong" with a frowning face but the screen only lasted half a second or so so I couldn't read the entire message. The next time I turned my pc on I got the error I mentioned in the original post. The only other thing I can think of rather than my HDD failing would be what the two people are talking about in this post - http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2696570/reboot-select-proper-boot-device.html?xtor=EREC-8889. When I go into my BIOS settings, my HDD is not labeled with UEFI. Any ideas with regards to that? I ran a chkdsk and it found no problems with my hard drive also.

Did you do a fresh install of windows 10 or upgrade it from a windows 7?

Is your bios set to UEFI boot, and is your drive GPT?

I did do a fresh install of windows 10, and sorry but I don't know the answers to the last two questions. How do I check if my BIOS is set to UEFI boot and check if my drive is GPT?
