Been having a rebooting problem along with just plain video loss and
scrambling for over a month now. Machine is as follows, (new):

AMD Athlon 3200+/400fsb
Thermaltake silent boost HS & fan
Thermaltake Butterfly PSU 480W
Three other fans in case
GA 7VT600 1394 mobo
Kingston PC3200/400 1 gig
Quadro FX500
WD Raptors (2) Running in Sata
Plextor DVD burner

Have replaced/switched everything except mobo, Ram & CPU.
Ran memtest86 and it froze me up. Tried M$ memory tester and froze on 4th
test.
Tried testing Ram in my other machine with the same programs, no problem, it
passed all tests. Replaced the memory that wouldn't pass with the ram that
did. The good Ram wouldn't pass in my new Gigabyte mobo. Does it sound like
the mobo??? CPU???? Driving me crazy.

Reboots when a burst of color hits the screen like when opening the internet
or playing video clips. Already tried different monitors and video cards
also.

PS Put Ram back that passed and it's working fine in my first machine, An
Athlon 1.2gig

Does sound like MoBo to me, but that is only my first impression sir. I
suspect it most unlikely that the CPU is faulty, but stranger things do
happen.

to test if it's the CPU or not you could try your new CPU in your existing
working machine, if the older board doesn't support the faster CPU then the
new board will certainly support the 1.2Ghz one ... try one way or the
other, to be certain it's the mobo have the working machine CPU and ram in
your new mobo with a known good working video card and nothing else ... then
run memtest and see what happens.

From what you've tried and the results / symptoms it sounds like it's gonna
be the ram sockets on the new mobo or maybe the memory controller, I agree
with what 40 PC says about it being unlikely it's the CPU.

Only other thing that makes hardware lockup/reboot is overhearting but it
sounds like you've got that covered.

Ya know, you have been pursuing this like it is a hardware problem.
In the BIOS how about trying:
Increasing the memory voltage by another 0.1 Volts.
Using ctl-F1 to lower the system clock to 166MHz.
Setting the multiplier switches to 8X.
Using ctl-F1 to be sure that the Kingston settings are correct.
Try slowing down the memory with CAS=3 and slowing the other settings by 1
click.
Make sure the AGP is set to 66MHz or lower.

Two many things are right for it to be a mojor problem. Once you get to
stability for a few days then you can start running performance back up.

Running a 3200 XP with this board is a stretch for the VT600. Every thing
has to be just right.

Thank you for the input JPS. I have felt all along that it was something
small out of whack. You are right on about ram. Mine wants 2.6V not 2.5V. I
understand everything you say except the cas=3. I am going to follow your
recommendations and see what happens. FYI I tried setting bios to top
performance as suggested by someone but system wouldn't boot. Is it true
that it's OK to under perform but you have to be careful when going the
other way?

PS: I RMA'd the mobo should be here in a few days.

Would a board with a nvidia chipset fit the AMD 3200+ better than the Via
600?I see Gigabyte makes both.

I'm sorry that this will attract outrage. I realise that there are many
peeps in this group who swear by Gigabuyte. My experience of G'Byte has
been nothing but poor. If you ever have the misfortune of telephoning their
Tech Support you will realise how alone and uncared for a company can make
you feel. They have a habit of blaming anything else that may reside in
your pc, rather than accepting that you do actually have a duff board. That
is only my experience though.

To make matters worse the guy who most frequently mans the T/S phone is
clearly of oriental origin. This is not a racist remark, but you really
would think that they would put someone who could understand plain English
and speak same wouldn't you? Not only that he sounds like he has just woken
up.

If I may add to this (a little late!), I had a similar problem which I fixed
in the BIOS by adding 0.1v to the AGP voltage (ie to make it run at 1.6v
rather than 1.5v). Try it! Good luck.
