Rebuilding PC, trying to figure out high end cpu and motherboard

So i have a gtx980 and little power to back it up. so i'm looking to upgrade my motherboard and cpu to something with a bit more punch. i've been looking at intel i7's and don't know which one to choose or what motherboard to get for it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Depends on your budget and PSU. As long as you have a 600W PSU You should be great with a 980. If you're upgrading you might as well go skylake, however you would need different RAM, so again, it depends on your budget.

I'm looking so spend no more than 1200, i have a 850w psu.

Ok, I would recommend keeping your PSU. I assume you plan on overclocking. I would recommend buying an i7 6700k, 2x8 GB Kit of Kingston HyperX DDR4 RAM, and an Asus Z170-A Board. Should run you no more than $680 http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bbq6f7
