Good morning everyone!!! I hope all is well with you.

I am working with :

Fractal torrent rgb e-atx case
Fractal north rgb adapter
Asus hero Maximus 8 motherboard
I7-6700k chip
Thermalright phantom spirit 120 cooler
Evga 850 watt gold psu
16g of (i forgot what kind of ram)
3060 12g

I originally built this years ago with a 980ti and captain genome. Then used it for a while and the 980ti died… then life and insane graphics card prices started happening so i shelved the system for a couple of years till things normalized because i refused to pay crazy inflated prices for things. Then prices normalized and it came out of storage and i have been replacing parts. My issue is that i am not really too sure about what processor to upgrade to. I know i am going to need to swap out the motherboard when i change the processor but i am not too sure about motherboards either. The fractal north case i have has connections for the front usb ports that are too advanced to plug into the asus hero maximus viii. Which was annoying. I would really appreciate the assistance of the big brains here in recommending to me what processor and motherboard to buy.

I will be using this system for *whisper* video games *whisper*. Possibly messing around with a little game design as well. But i am mostly just concerned with some future proofing for games.

I eagerly await your wisdom!!!

What's your budget for these upgrades? The recommendations for upgrades for $200 and $1000 are very different! And which EVGA Gold-rated 850W do you have? I see 13 PSUs for EVGA that match those conditions and they range from decent ones that ought to be replaced if you're going real high-end with the GPU and some that are excellent as-is.

You don't need to feel embarrassed by using it for video games. I would wager about 90% of mid-to-high-end PCs that people ask about here are for gaming purposes, because that's the most common usage of high-end PCs. A lot more people play GTA V than do mathematical modeling (though I do both on my main rig).

Hello and thank you for the response and for the a-ok on video games lol :)

I am using an evga supernova 850 watt g2.
Part number: 220-g2-0850

I am definitely going to be doing a graphics card upgrade in the future. Not the near future though.

To be honest, my budget is around 1000 at the higher end. But if you were like… Mr. Curses.. this will future proof for ages and ages i may be able to swing more.

I suddenly feel like i need to do 3d rendering or mathematical modeling now though lol. The closest thing i mathematically model is building a base in kenshi 🧐

Something like this maybe.

Thank you why and lucky. I cannot wait for the new chips since i am trying to run starfield and am running into stuttering issues. It is playable though.
