Hi all,

I am doing a small upgrade to my PC to get a bit more life out of it before I buy new in 12-18 months.

Currently have a Ryzen 7 1700 and a GTX 1060 6GB which plays new games okay but not brilliant. Has served me well for over 3 years

Running on an Asustek B350M-E motherboard
16 gb DDR4 RAM
750 Watt PSU (Need to double check tha7)

I have a GTX 1080 in the post which I picked up really cheap and should give me a little graphics boost. I was told that I could not upgrade my CPU much by the local shop but the information on the internet would suggest otherwise.

Can someone confirm what my motherboard could take? If it could potentially use a higher end Ryzen then maybe I won't need a new rig next year. Decent Ryzen CPU and perhaps a RTX card in there. I don't need ultra 4k gaming or anything like that. Just a half decent setup really. 4k and 144mhz at 60fps+ would be nice if my budget goes that far

I just really need clarity on the CPU upgrade potential if anyone could shed some light.

Many thanks for reading

thats a large budget for a simple upgrade. Prices on CPUs are also rising, but here's a parts list for you:

With a bios upgrade, you could jump to a 3700X, 3800X/XT, or even a 3900X/XT

Thanks. :)

Not sure why the computer shop (Who are normally excellent) gave me rogue advice. I remember at the time of purchasing the machine the chap (in a different local store) told me that the Am4 socket should be future proof, but that additional cooling may be required. Which is understandable

So if what you are saying is correct (I have no reason to doubt) then potentially I could upgrade the current setup to something pretty darn good without having to fork out the lot up front. I really like the case as well :)

I had a top end budget of around £1500 ($2000usd) for a new build but think I can get away with considerably less if the CPU range is better. Want a monitor in that price. The 1080 which is in the post should keep me happy for a little while whilst the stock issues of the new RTX cards sort themselves out

Would need

CPU and cooling
GPU
Bigger primary SSD
New monitor

which I am sure I could pick up well within my budget. Won't be high end but will be pretty decent all the same!

this is possibly overkill a bit, but you have a 12 core CPU with an adequate cooler,, a 2 TB SSD, a 1440p monitor at 75 hz, and a GPU that is adequate for 1440P (avg 109 fps in in the Toms Hardware review). you have enough left over t consider a 3070 (+100), 3080 (+300), or a 6800XT (+250) if you can find them.

you could also save 150-200 with a 3800XT or 3700X instead, another 80ish with only a 1 TB SSD

Thanks for that.

I would be delighted with a setup like that. Possibly a better screen but other than that it looks superb. Partpicker looks like an interesting place. Will have to see what the wallet is like after xmas.
