Time to upgrade. Which 120gb SATA to get??? Any real difference between the main players (Seagate, WD, Maxtor)?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

There's no substantial difference. Seagate is marginally slower in some benchmarks but is quieter and cooler. The other two are pretty much equivalent.

I would go with either the WD or Seagate ones, Ive never had any problems with my seagate or WD drives. I have heard quite a few bad things about the maxtor drives though I my dad is having problems with his SATA mator drives and the sil3112 controller.

[Insert witty comment here]

You might want to also include the latest Hatachi (www.hgst.com)
The have the best bench marks and use FluidDynamicBallbearing, which makes the drivers extremely quit.

He means Hitachi, do you mean the deskstar models? How is FDB better than mechanical bearings?

Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 SATA. It is faster than WD JD (none Raptor).
Maxtor, Seagate, and Hitachi all use FDB. WD special editions use the louder and older technology, but I believe they are planning to release some drives with FDB.

would ur JD n special edition refer to the JB cavier editions?

drat, i was just thinking of getting the WD1200JB
im lazy to check, but is the 7k250 more expensive by a lot?

I think the JD is SATA special edition. I think the prices are pretty even. I did check on newegg and I no longer see the SATA 120 for Hitachi. It must be soldout.

Performance ranking:
1) Hitachi
2) WD
3) Maxtor
4) Seagate

Reliability
1) Hitachi* Not sure, because the product just came out, but no news is good news.
2) WD
3) Seagate
4) Maxtor

Bullshit. How can you even think to put Hitachi drives on a reliability ranking when they've hardly existed 6 months? Not to mention that they are basically IBM's old deathstars and now come with a 1 year warranty. As for the other 3, well, you could be right, you could be wrong, the actual drive reliability data is a closely guarded secret. Personally I doubt there is much to choose between them, perhaps the most important thing is warranty time and most of the companies still give 3 years on their top models - except Hitachi.

Your right about the Hitachi reliability. You really can't tell. When one goes on you, then you know. As for performance, according to most reviews, the new 7K250 is the fasters on average.

As for the Deathstars, that was the pre 120GXP. I think anything on or after 120GXP is fine. Like, 180GXP, probably still IBM technology, but pretty stable, with sold performance. I think Hitachi's footprints were on Model 7K250, where you see a increase in performance over its predecessors and competitors.
