Hello Friends

For other 2 members of my family having each one their own laptop with a direct installation as follows respectively:

  • Windows
  • Linux

Is the intention to connect either 2 or 3 monitors. Now according with my understanding the best approach is:

  1. Buy a docking with N HDMI ports (and according the model it would have USB ports of type A & B too) to connect.
  2. Furthermore the Docking needs mandatorily the USB of type C.

Am I correct about 1 & 2? If I am correct, pls, according with your experience:

  • Would you share your best recommendations?
  • Indicate if is necessary install some software in Linux

For example for Ubuntu I installed something about "GNOME Tweaks" to do a special configuration about workspaces. Thus I am assuming would be necessary something similar to work with the Docking.

Thanks in advance

1| You're correct, on a generic
2| For convenience, yes. You could look at Type-A docks or ones that pair with a Thunderbolt port, provided your laptop(s) have that port/feature.

You might want to mention the make and models of your respective laptops as well as the make and models of the monitors you intend to hook up with said laptops. You should also mention where you're located, what your preferred site for purchase is and what your budget for said docking station is.

What would be the not generic?

2| For convenience, yes. You could look at Type-A docks or ones that pair with a Thunderbolt port, provided your laptop(s) have that port/feature.

For my current laptop:

  • ASUS ZENBOOK UX501VW-DS71T 15.6" 4K UHD Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 16 GB Memory 512 GB SSD Windows 10
According with the specs it has the following about ports:

  • Features the latest performance ports: 1x Thunderbolt III (via USB Type-C), 1x Gen 2 USB 3.1 Type-C, 3x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI. Bluetooth 4.0 and SDXC reader for all your media needs.
You might want to mention the make and models of your respective laptops

For my current laptop with the mentioned spec shown above and for two possible new laptops for two members of my family

* Dell (for my uncle - he is doing a research about the model - it is for Windows)
* Asus Zenbook (for my cousin - it is for Linux - either Fedora or Ubuntu)

as well as the make and models of the monitors you intend to hook up with said laptops.

Samsung monitors with HDMI ports. It seems is the most standard.

You should also mention where you're located, what your preferred site for purchase is and what your budget for said docking station is.

My uncle and cousin live in USA, the buy should be done through Amazon, the budget is unknown but of course it is based according with the final decision done through the set of models available through Amazon.

Note: The acquisition of the 2 docking stations is mostly for the 2 new laptops respectively. Is expected to buy the same docking station (manufacturer and model).

As a special note: If the docking station selected fits for my old Asus would be great.

Thanks in advance for your support
