Correct, DRAM doesn't care what motherboard or channel capabilities (as long as say DDR3 DRAM and a DDR3 mobo - Each stick of DRAM is a single 64 bit device and runs in single channel, if you have 2 sticks and the mobo is dual channel capable, if installed correctly (1 stick in each channel) the MC (memory controller) will see the two sticks as a single 128 bit device (hence dual channel and a slight performance increase (up to 10-15%)....If a mobo is capable or tri or quad channel use the the appropriately placed sticks will run as a 192 (Tri) or 256 (Quad) bit device
You can't pair 1 stick of RAM with itself. That's awful logic.

You need 2 pairs to run in a dual channel, hence "Dual". You will need to buy a kit. All DDR3 supports dual channel, most will run in quad, but there are specific vendor brands for it. Only motherboards that support quad will use quad.
