Recommendations for software/DVD?

I'm returning to the game after a long gap but am quite happy to be lumped
in as a beginner who knows the basic ideas and moves but probably needs a
more structured learning program now, I have some good books but am lucky
enough to have a birthday coming up shortly so will put in a list to our
Gladys and see what she comes up with

First of all, a travel chess for my train journeys, any advances on this
one, which seems decent enough and not too pricey

As for software, I have heard that CT-Art is a good one but am wondering
whether any others are recommended?, theres a list here

of which "Strategy by Squares" seem interesting concepts, and the basics of
winning chess DVD, theres also a big list of training DVDs by Yasser

Books are best for learning.

The best program is Fritz by Chessbase.

Do you have a Pocket PC ? If not, I would get one because there are two
great programs for it so you can take it along on your trips.

Pocket Grandmaster and Pocket Fritz 2.

I happen to be selling my copy of Pocket Grandmaster for $12.49 Paypal...

Welcome.

If you follow John J.'s suggestion and get a Pocket PC, (for all I
know, you may already have one) you can get Pocket CT-ART 3.0 now,
which, although I have not actually seen it, would appear to be
identical to the other version, except that it runs, shock...horror...
on a Pocket PC.

I suggest that you stick to the recommendations on the Chessville site.
If you follow that course, you should improve more quickly than just
about any method short of having a Kasparov or a Kramnik as your
personal tutor/trainer.

The mephisto is a good model. I have the cheaper one (Mephisto Travel)
and am very happy with it.

As for software,

- Chessmaster 10k best newbie program i've found. Tutorials are
excellent.

- Fritz 8 deluxe. Found this one at the local EB. probably the best at
analysis. I like to leave it running overnight to go through my ICC
standard games to catch my many blunders

- Chessbase (light) - full version is quite expensive, so I use the free
light version. great for going through games.

I also ALWAYS carry around a Nintendo Gameboy Advance sp with
Chessmaster. It fits very nicely in my jacket inside pocket and I am
constantly playing it.

Although im just a patzer newbie at chess. (just started playing last
August). I have picked up these products and my skill and understanding
of the game has improved alot.
