Hey guys, looking for a good software to record my gameplay for YouTube videos. I tried fraps and really didn't like it because the large files. Anything thats good under 60?

my setup is
Gigabyte 660 OC'd
8 Gigs of Corsair Vengeance Ram
AMD FX 6300 CPU OC'd to 3.83 GHz
1920x1080 23 inch monitor

All games are on ultra, playing crysis 3 on ultra at 50 FPS just to give you an example ( I know picking a recording software has some to do with your rig as well)

Other than Fraps the only one I hear about people using is Bandicam. A few of my friends use it. It is $40 for a full license. You can download the trial with a 10 minute recording limit and a watermark and test it out. The quality isn't as good as Fraps since it is compressed to save space, but most people probably can't even tell a difference. A 15 minute video is usually about 1GB with Bandicam.

Do those just work like a PVR where you plug your video cable into the back of the unit and then plug another video cable from the unit to your PC?

I don't own one myself but if I were to get one, I'd probably get the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro with a proper HDD and some cables...and some video editing software. That said, if for some reason you're capturing from a MAC computer, you'd have to go with a different product.

That would only really work if you are recording games from an xbox.
In which case I suggest the Elgato Game Capture if you want HD. If you don't care then Roxio HD works good.

If it's a pc game you want to record then you need a software program to capture the gameplay.
Most people know Fraps..

Here's a comparison between Fraps, Mirillis Action, Dxtory & Bandicam. (Far Cry 3 on Ultra settings)

I'm wondering why you don't think it'd work... the principle is the same. That's how I do it.

Just tried it and I was surprised that it was working. (using the Elgato Game Capture HD) One thing is you HAVE to play at fullscreen because it just records the entire desktop.

You could get something like a Roxio Game Capture HD with the adapters, but the quality of the video probably won't be very good. Using my Elgato which uses an HDMI cable the recording was not as clear quality as other software like Fraps or Action, but it was very good nonetheless.

However, it seems like a stretch to buy a $150 capture card to record PC games to get a video not quite as clear quality as a program to do it for $30 and be clear (which OP said "under 60.00 USD") Unless he plans on recording Xbox gameplay also.

The best part about doing it this way would be that there would be NO hit on FPS. and a much smaller file size.

For me it wouldn't be fun having to switch the cables back and forth from xbox to my PC whenever I want to record on either. And some games I like to play in windowed mode.

It's like you think outloud lol. Like I said earlier, "if you've got extra dough". As far as the quality goes, it depends on what you pay for. There are some DVR that are more PC compatible than others (and yes a software install is required).

Fullscreen is required because it's a straight pull (meaning whatever shows on your screen gets captured.

Note: Keep in mind that in either case, if you're recording at full 1080p with 60FPS (with surround sound incl.), you'll need a big harddrive to take that hit as it'll fill up pretty quickly. I've filled my 2 TB harddrive with 1 round of BF3. Geez!!!

If you mean me, I didn't really contradict myself. I corrected myself later, because saying you would need a software program to record gameplay was wrong.

I want to point out after a test I did Using Elgato's "Game Capture HD" software when recording bumped my cpu usage from 19% up to 45% where as Fraps bumped up to 30% and Mirillis Action 21%

Yeah, it was justified and makes sense. It just felt more like listening to someone talk than a regular reply.

What you are looking for has got to be something called Open Broadcaster Software. My PC sucks and it runs it very well. It's totally free as well. Here's a nice video I found with some more details and tips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nphBCoQFrZQ
