Recovering a portable external drive?

I have an ADATA HV620 portable external drive. Unfortunately, it's fallen onto the floor from a table two or three times since I last accessed the data and I can't access the data any more. When I connect it to my Windows 10 laptop, it sees it as the E: local drive but when Windows tries to get the contents to list the file and folder names, it goes away for a long time, then tells me that the disk needs to be formatted before it can be used. I think it's unable to see any of the data. Naturally, if I go ahead and format it, I'll lose most of a terabyte of data that I can't readily replace, assuming the drive is even usable any more.

Is there any way to recover the data from this drive or should I consider it gone?

Also, is it likely the disk will still work if it was reformatted or is it toast?

I'd really like to get the data back if anyone can suggest a way to do that. It would be a nice bonus if the drive could still be used too.

Solution
please check it with professional recovery service to make sure the internal parts of hdd is fine
if there is any physical issue with the hdd i don't know if it can be used again
if there is no physical issue please try the recuva or easeus datarecovery for recovering lost files

Solution
but if the platters and heads are not working anymore, the external adapter trick doesn othing

if you really must recover information form it, a professional services is all you can do now that could really recover anything from it and keep your expectations very low

true, but sometimes the symptoms of a failing HDD and a failing enclosure are the same
