Another buddy issue. I have been given a friends "Baby" to cure. A Dell studio XPS running Windows Vista Home Premium. It had gotten infected and damaged the MBR. the system will no longer boot into vista. Keeps restarting. He has no recovery CD and needs the op. sys. to function to transfer saved projects. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. As it is the original install to the system a Dell Recovery DVD for this model should work to at least let me get a command prompt but I have not been able to find one. If I can access a command prompt I should be able to get it fixed/get it to fix it's self. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
if it shows the vista loading screen its not likely to be mbr

what happens if you try f8 as its starting up?

and if connected as a second drive using this usually solves permission problems

I installed a new HDD and Windows 7 pro for him. He has downloaded/installed the application into windows 7. I had the same thought as you, but he cannot access the saved projects from the previous install/Vista install. He is a music producer wannabe with a vision. Has to have his work. Permissions are a problem and/or damage done by infection/repair. The file are there but he cannot access them to do anything with them. Also his plugins. Some are licensed. It has gotten complicated. I would like to set him up with a dual boot system (actually I have set it up but the vista partition will not boot and the 7 partition cannot access the files correctly. I am pretty sure they need to be transferred from within Vista. Thanks for your help! hopefully someone has an Idea how to repair the Vista install.

Bios post, hands off to vista, shows loading screen, HDD activity, black screen, bout 20 seconds of continued HDD activity then restart. I have ordered a pulpit from eBay to begin my sermon...he had 2 Gb.s free space on a 550 Gb. HDD with the Vista all jammed up. I am making him a list!

Hitting "F8" while booting takes me to a selection screen "command prompt" does nothing, black screen. "safe mode" opens the typical safe mode desktop without the task bar on the bottom. there is no start button and seemingly no way to access anything to make changes or even poke around. Possibly still infected or infection damage. I am not sure. I scanned the drive with multiple scanning tools clearing out what I felt was an extensive collection on pups, trojans, two back doors, over 100 hits on Malware scan, 50 hits plus on virus scans. it began the boot loop before he brought me in. I am going to get back to him in the next couple of days. I am going over the Geek materials now, Thank you.

Good information for future reference. Thank you. Most of this will get me to a factory reset. That would destroy anything he needs to work from. I am trying to repair the install to save his work to get it out in usable form.
