Refresh rate vs resolution: Help?

This is my current build so far:
CPU: R7 1700x
MOBO: ASUS strix x370
GPU: some 1080, haven't picked yet
RAM: 2x8gb Gskill 3200 RGB

The 1440p monitor is on sale, so the prices are close. But i can see that the 144hz monitor lacks G-sync, and i know that my R7 wouldnt ALWAYS be able to hit the 144fps mark. So my question then is, should i get the 144hz monitor even if it doesn't have G-sync, or go with 1440p? I really want some detailed answers cuz I've asked this a lot and all i get is "Just get ____ cuz its better"

(I mostly play FPS's, but I play some Open world RPGS at times)

Having used both a 1440p monitor and a 1080p 144hz monitor, I would suggest buying the 144hz hands down. Especially with a computer as high end as yours.
I got rid of my 1440p monitor after buying a 1080p 144hz monitor just to try it out, I still remember the day and I would definitely buy it again.
G-sync is a bonus but it shouldnt be a deciding factor when it comes to choosing a monitor, and having a screen refresh rate as high as 144hz would be enough to get rid of any screen tearing in my experience anyway rendering it moot.
Not to mention you dont just see the difference in video games, the smoothness of your computer in general will improve, from scrolling down pages to moving your cursor.

TL;DR - Buy the 144hz monitor and experience true PC Master Race power! Seriously though, its the best.
