refresh rate

What exactly is the refresh rate? I've seen on my video card box the different rates my video card supports (prophet II mx), but I don't really know what the difference is between them. I'm assuming that a higher refresh rate is better, is this so? I have a CTX 15" that I bought a couple years ago, and I don't think it supports anything beyond 60Hz. Is this bad? Would a better refresh rate make a difference in games? I've finally gotten everything else in my computer running fine, and now I'm wondering if I should have bought a better monitor. I don't have any problems with the monitor, I'm just wondering if I should invest in a new one. Any info on this matter would be appreciated.

Refresh rate, if I remember the technical information correctly, has to do with how fast the monitor "refreshes" from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. Now here's what I'm sure of: A higher refresh rate is better. You will notice less flicker - just check this out by looking at the monitor with your peripheral vision. If you use your computer a lot, a new monitor capable of higher refresh rates should be advantageous to you.

60 Hz is very low. Try to get at least a refresh rate of 70 Hz. I had a small 14" monitor doing 60Hz at 800*600 and when I was working for over 4 hours I got migrane and sour eyes every time. No I have a 19" doing 1600*1280 at 75Hz and no healthproblems at all.
