The first microcomputer I ever saw was the Altair 8008A back in 1977. It was a 4-bit computer with, I believe, 1 KB of memory. I remember the kid that owned it keying in octal instructions on toggle switches. I can't remember how many instructions were needed to get the computer to talk to the punched tape reader so that he could load in larger programs.
I bought my first computer in 1980. It was an Atari 800, 6502C @ 1.79 Mhz, 16 KB of RAM.
I didn't buy my next computer until 1987. It had an AMD 286, 10 Mhz @ 12 Mhz. 512 KB RAM. I've been buying AMD processors ever since (because they have always been cheaper than Intel).
Over the years I replaced the motherboard I think six times. I retired the old 286's case and power supply last month when I replaced the FIC 503+, K6-2 @400 Mhz with a KT7 and a Duron 600 @ 900 Mhz.
From 1980 to 2000 I went from a 1.79 Mhz bare computer, cost $750, to a 900 Mhz bare computer (motherboard, CPU, memory, case) for $340.
How many us wish they could have back all of money spent in the past for computers to spend today?
