Remote Desktop Performance

I'm torn between building a new PC and getting a new Laptop. I hate the prices on the laptops for the performance I need but I love the portability. So here's my question:

Assume I build a powerful PC, speced as high as possible for around $1500. I would like to know if its possible to get "at the desk" performance while being remoted into that desktop from my Laptop via LAN and what my best bet for a RDP application would be.

I'd like to be able to sit in my room and edit video or game from my laptop without experiencing huge latency. I'd happily acquire a new router if necessary. My current one supports 801.11n (max) as does my laptop.

The native Windows Remote Desktop Connection is probably the fastest, but trying to play a game with that will be far substandard.

I use TeamViewer and Windows RDC to connect to other PC/HTPC in the house (and at work), and it is not the same.

I know that if I start Battlefield 3 (or 4) on a Win7 machine running an AMD video card, and then remote into the machine, the video drivers loaded for the remote session are not for the AMD GPU.
The game then crashes and if I try to start it up it says that I don't have a compatible video card and will not run.
I would assume the same for Nvidia, but I haven't tried it.

In other words you can't run (at least some) games via a windows remote desktop session.

In addition, I don't think that even a Gigibit ethernet connection would have a fraction of the bandwidth that the internal bus has between a CPU and the video card/monitor.

I used an app called Kainy (for Android) and it performed quite well, even over TMO's 4G LTE. I wouldn't try to play Battlefield with it but for low action MMO's like FFXIV and WoW it worked quite well. I even had decent performance playing Skyrim. Via Wifi there was almost no latency. The problem I had was that it's a damn smartphone app and I'm constrained by the touchscreen only interface. Too many buttons, not enough space.

Their recent updates have made it worse but I was looking for something that had similar performance.
