Question Repairable or New HD?

Greetings!

Our electricity went off and came back on. My computer usually boots right back up but not this time. It took about 40 minutes of waiting, hard booting by pressing the button down, doing that 3x when the logo appeared, etc. It is finally “operational.” Other things happen like suddenly FireFox will take up 69% of system memory with high power use and just hangs there.

I lost part of my data (Steam, photos, etc.), or at least access to it, on the d: drive. I assume this is a HD issue?

There are two drives (C: & D but suddenly there is also an E: drive (the location is not available). Look, I got a new drive for free!

Disk Management provides more detail but I don’t know what to do with it. I have images but when I try to upload anything or attach something that program locks up. It shows the E: drive as Disk 1 but also Disk 2 which is my C: drive. Disk 0 is the D: drive.

(C: ) - NTFS
(D: ) - NTFS
(E: ) - RAW
(Disk 2 partition 1)
(Disk 2 partition 4)

“The Parameter is Incorrect” error appears when trying to look at the new E: drive or the partitions.

I performed chkdsk on all the drives (6.15 hours!) with “healthy” results on everything. A sfc /scannow said it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them but nothing changed. The CBS.log was long and I certainly don’t know what to make of that either.

Is the E: part of my drive recoverable? Or is it time to buy a new hard drive?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

List specs of your system. Include model names of all your HDDs/SSDs.

Sorry about that. Here is the system info and two screen shots. It just won't let me paste the image but the links should work.

You have corrupted file system.
You'll need to acquire another 2TB drive. New drive is required for storing recovered data.
Then use data recovery software to recover data from your corrupted drive.

I've had good results with getdataback.
Free version allows checking, if anything can be recovered. Full version is not free though.

https://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-products.htm

If you don't care about recovering data from E: drive, then just format it.
It will become available, but completely empty.

I definitely like how certain you are because I can act on that!

If I try the free version of getdataback (thank you for the suggestion!) which drive do I check? I think it's the D but not sure. Same question if I decide to format.

sfc /scannow said files were corrupted but fixed. chkdsk showed everything was healthy. Is HDtune just better and still something I should do? Before getdataback?

Drive with corrupted file system /data inaccessible.
Take a wild guess ...

TLDR - It's drive E:

HDtune will show, if your drive has any physical damage.
So - either it's physically fine or physically damaged and has to be replaced.

Well, this may explain some things. Do I really need to complete the scan? HDTune showed a bunch of damaged sectors, 7.8% after 50 minutes. The way the damage is spread out might explain why I have access to some things on the drive and not others?

HD Tune SS

Any suggestions for a new SSD? The corrupted one was a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB.

Going to see what I can retrieve from this...

Ekhm... yeah, it's severely damaged.
Can you show also screenshot from HDtune - health section?
And check it with Samsung Magician also.

Crucial MX500 is a good choice.
I think they have ceased production of this model. But it still can be obtained.

Thank you for the quick reply. The health section for that drive won't show anything. Completely blank. It shows the info for the other (C :) drive but not this damaged one. Thanks for the drive recommendation. I was also looking at this...

Hours of scanning with GetDataBack and I can see my lost files but it won't let me copy them without paying $80.
Of course not. That's how they make their money. At least you know there's a possibilty of data recovery, but don't count on all recovered files being readable.

If $80 gets some/most/all your data back it's a bargain. A professional recovery agency would charge many hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Now might be a good time to start a 3-2-1 backup strategy, to cope with the next disk failure.

Do you know Tom Bombadil?

Ha, first off, yes I know Tom! Most people don't know the reference but I've always loved that little pony. I also happens to be the name of my poor deceased cat. Anyway, you are indeed a person of culture.

Thanks for the 3-2-1 idea. I'm just going to take the L on the data. I happened to backed up most of my stuff on Feb 1 so the loss is not bad and not worth $80.

The bigger problem might be that my 60-second boot time is up to 30 minutes since the power surge. It boots from a different drive, the C : drive, that showed no damage after a scan. Other odd things like in file explorer I need to manually refresh to see new files, etc. Could that be corrected when I install the new drive?

Here is the HDTune scan and health results for the C drive.

Scan - Yippie, all green!

Health - It kind of concerns me that its blank, just like the damaged 870 Evo drive above.

Could it help to I reinstall windows? Could installing the new drive solve the boot problem? If you have suggestion on how to trouble shoot this I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm just pasting my drive info here because I'm confused by it. Maybe sharper eyes than mine will see something. Thanks again.

It boots from a different drive, the C : drive, that showed no damage after a scan.
When a failed drive goes through detection process during boot, it can delay boot process.
Disconnect damaged drive and mechanical HDD and try to boot without them.
Should be fast.

So - it's either damaged SSD or machanical HDD causing this (or both).
Health - It kind of concerns me that its blank, just like the damaged 870 Evo drive above.
This can happen if sata controller is set into RAID mode.
Go into BIOS and make sure, sata controller is set into AHCI mode.

Oh, you said the scary word "BIOS!" Seriously, thanks. I'll do that. I'm in that state right now where I just don't boot until I get a certain amount of work done so I'll try it later on. Once that new drive arrives (tomorrow?), I'll unplug the damaged one. Heck, it will give me a chance to clean out the case.
