My HDD (Seagate Barracuda 1 TB) suddenly died like 2 years ago and from that time being not recognized by OS nor BIOS... I always wanted to retreive data since they're still important to me. Recently I've tried USB to SATA solution, the HDD spins but is still not visible, it just randomly opens my File Explorer like as HDD wants to be recognized, but fails. My OS is Windows 10, I guess you don't need more information. There is older HDD with same/similar problem, but I would like to solve this one first.

Welcome to the community, @Skyren!

Unfortunately, you need to determine how bad this HDD has failed first. The best way to do that is to run the HDD's brand-specific diagnostic utility and determine what is its health and SMART status. (in case you get recognized in Windows)
Whenever you connect it externally or internally, does it show up in Disk management in Windows? Posting some screenshots would be really helpful.

If the HDD is physically corrupted (hardware failure), then I'd definitely consider contacting a professional data recovery company to help with the file retrieving. Doing these attempts by yourself could potentially do more harm than good.
I'm not sure if you have tried using multiple SATA cables and different computers, but I'd definitely say it's a good thing to try in hopes to get the HDD detected.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting & the SMART results.

Thanks for answering @SuperSoph_WD

HDD died out of nowhere, at least it looked like it's dead since I couldn't make it detect in BIOS in the period of time I had patience to do so.
I kept HDD in hope that I will fix it someday.

It's really strange what is happening. HDD wasn't recognized or was buggy on my main Desktop PC, which I used HDD with and it has been replaced with SSD, shortly . Now, I had opportunity to test it out on another device, (newly bought Laptop) and surprisingly, it shows disk through SATA to USB... sometimes it's also buggy, but mainly it works.

To specify, what I need exactly. I'd like to get some data out from it... partition I: is fully accessible, whereas H: is in RAW format and it's telling me to format first, which we don't need. My question is, how to resolve this? How can I access this partition so it's fully accessible without being formatted?

Also don't forget the HDD is connected via SATA to USB, since there is no other possibility ATM... which might cause some issues while testing disk if I am not wrong on this one.

Here is a SS of the Disk Manager and if you wonder what language is that, simply translate Czech to English if needed (no diacritics needed [ěščřžýáíéóúů]):

Could be a firmware bug.

A lot of seagates had it and that's what happened.

Over time it disappeared completely. Even the BIOS couldn't detect it

Whats the model?? If you can, look at the sticker on the hdd. What firmware is on it?

Model: ST1000DM003
FW: CC4B

And yeah, I've been posting on tech forums immediatelly after "death" and they told me firmware was complete big bug.

Also older HDD which is less important and is less recognized by Windows, but still, you could tell me.

Model: ST3320613AS
FW: SD11

OK for the first one it looks like the firmware is up to CC4H

What you could try is get the ISO, (if the hdd worked, you could have tried the exe file). burn it to a blank cd.

Dont copy the ISO to the cd as an ISO, you need a program to extract whats in it to the cd.

If you use Windows 10 select the ISO then right mouse on to burn it to cd.

Make sure the ST1000DM003 is the only hdd in the case thats connected.

Once its burned to the cd, boot from the cd. Change the bootdisk in the BIOS to cd/dvd.

See if it detects the ST1000DM003. if it does, it may update the FW on it

The 2nd one is here do the same thing

The thing is, I am running it through SATA to USB on my Laptop as external. How can I do this then? I am able to run the .exe fine, will it prompt me to choose the HDD?

The hdd would have to be recognised, to run the exe.file. You could try it but it may not work.

Got a spare desktop anywhere?

You could try it and see if it detects it on the laptop. It may or may not work. Does the BIOS on the laptop detect the hdd ??

So I plugged the HDD into my main Desktop PC and weirdly, BIOS detects it, but it won't boot the OS, instead it keeps restarting.

So I did burn an .ISO to DVD and installation FAILED since it didn't detect the drive.
Weird is that BIOS shows me the disk. What to do?

The second HDD (older) it not being detected in BIOS, but on my Laptop, it is detected in Windows and also in BIOS, 3 times.

Should have used a cd for the iso. You did use something to burn it to the cd right. You cant copy the iso as is to the cd. It wont work

And did you change the bootdisk to the cd in the bios then boot from it? Dont try and run it in windows. It's not an install file

Nah, I've burned it... and I used Windows 10 utility for it. The ISO file was loaded nicely, but the process FAILED since there was no disk detected as mentioned above. Maybe I should take a SS of it?

Unfortunately even replacing the pcb does not guarantee actual data recovery,as many of them are paired to the hdd internals and they will not work together (even if they do come from the same model).Your only hope is a data recovery company.

Hey there again, @Skyren & Merry Christmas!

I'm afraid that the screenshots from the SMART attribute tests indicate that your hard drive has failed. 🙁 Unfortunately, there are too many bad sectors, so I'm not sure you will be able to retrieve any healthy (uncorrupted) data by yourself without the assistance of a professional data recovery company! 🙁

I'd definitely not tamper with the drive further, if you wish to retrieve your files. Bad sectors cannot be fixed or repaired really. There's a slight chance to get something off using a sector-by-sector data recovery method, but yet again I'm not sure how successful that would be either.

Best of luck & Happy Holidays, everyone.
