I came into an iMac the other day that was in need of some repair. I had no idea what was wrong with it but i wanted to see if i could fix it and possibly sell it off. I got to messing with this thing and found out the inside had been destroyed but the mac still works surprisingly enough.
All the wires going to things like the fan and whatever else have been cut, the heat sink has been smashed up with a hammer or something, just looks like someone was trying to destroy it. All they didnt do was light it on fire. If i had to guess, id say the original intention was to retrieve the hdd from the mac but the person didnt have the security bit to remove the screen so instead they attempted to make it unusable.
in any case its in my hands now and Im interested in trying to get it up and running again.
The question i have is this:
In order to repair the wiring i can ive chosen to solder the wires back together, but when i strip the wires they will come up short of eachother. Is there a special kind of linkage wire designed for this? Some little piece of wire to bridge the small gap and allow me to recreate the connection by soldering it to the short wire, extending it to reach the other half.
I could make these out of spare parts i have laying around but i wanted to know if there was something actually designed for this as i want to make this computer reliable.
And once i solder the connection what should i use to cover the exposed wire? Would electrical tape be well enough? Im sure leaving a bunch of stripped wires with solder and a small extension hovering just above a live motherboard is just asking for trouble. Just wanna be sure electrical tape is well enough for the job, or should i use something like shrink wrap? Or is there something else more professional?
I know the right way to do this would be to buy the parts and replace them all but I need to turn a profit on this if i am to sell it, so i cannot sink money into this needlessly. I am already going to have to get a new heatsink for it. Im only going to buy replacements for the things i absolutely have to.
Thanks in advance to all assistance.

Electrical tape will comes off after a while. Heat shrink instead.

Without seeing exactly what wires you're looking at, I'd probably just go with similar gauge, soldered together, with heat shrink over it.
A splice object will look like a hack job.

The exterior is in good condition. If I repair it and it works correctly i think i could get 80 bucks off it. I obtained it for free. As long as im making some sort of profit after i buy and use supplies. I buy broken things and repair and resell often. I just havent had to solder wires together that are gonna be packed down on the motherboard before. This things like a laptop as far as being compact goes. If it was a normal tower i probably wouldnt have to worry about the wires touching the board since its fairly open inside. But the wires on this are laying on or really close to the board and i wouldnt want it to fry. I even havent started working on it yet, Im trying to figure a budget and price what this model is going for to see if its even worth repairing. No profit or very little is a no go. I'll sell it for parts, the screen and cd drive work and the motherboard itself powers on, so its good.
As far as wire splices go though, would i be better off making my own from junk laying around? Or should i buy them off amazon? If i ever needed to splice a wire before, i never used wire splices. Usually the wire was either already long enough or i'd cut my own and just twist them together and use electric tape.
