Hi guys,

When I watched the new release of the newest GTX 1080 I was completelly amazed about how outstanding this new card is going to be.

However, I bought my EVGA GTX 980 Ti 6gb 384bits reference 06G-P4-4993-KR in February/2016 and I was wondering if it worths to sell this card (taking the advantage that it has only 3 months from the purchase date and has the biggest piece of the one year warranty still to come) and with that, buy the newest GTX 1080.

What do you guys think about this?

Or should I stay with the GTX 980 Ti and wait until ,maybe, the next generation?

Thanks and regards,

You should wait. The used selling price of the 980 Ti is already depreciated due to the hype surrounding Pascal. Also, we won't know what the real world performance of the GTX 1080 is, until the GPU is released and trusted gamers and hardware reviewers get their hands on it. Anything that Nvidia and AMD states is no more than marketing spin. Don't believe the hype.

I should wait. You'll lose a lot of money if you sell the 980Ti now and buy a GTX1080 instead. A lot of the Pascal hype is based on partially complete benches so I'd at least sit this on out until all details are clear.

@jerkingbad Would you mind stating your full specs, just to satisfy my curiosity? Please include your power supply's mfg. and model #.

13thmonkey's mention of EVGA step-up is a good point. You being eligible depends on when in February you purchased the 980 Ti, as the program has a maximum length of 90 days. You might want to contact EVGA support ASAP to see if their is special consideration given due to Pascal's pending release date. If they tell you yes, be sure to get that in writing (email / chat, etc).

Yeah, that's a bad position. Also, I did make the poor assumption that you were located in the United States. My mistake. I'm going to back-peddle on my original answer somewhat and now say "It depends". Personally I would still wait, but I can't say for sure whether the 980 Ti's will depreciate further after the release of the GTX 1080. If I were you, I would figure out what you could honestly sell your 980 Ti used for and then make a determination if it's worth it to upgrade at this point.

As for myself, "I think" I'm going to hold out for the 1080 Ti's, but it depends on how much an improvement the 1080 (non-Ti) is over my current cards. But again, I never believe manufacturer marketing spin.

You shouldn't upgrade just for the sake of it unless you have plenty of spare cash. If or when the 980Ti you have starts to struggle playing the games you want at acceptable settings and framerates (and that's personal preference) that's when you upgrade. I have a 980 I have been using for quite a while now and the only thing that will get me to upgrade will be a move to a new screen with higher res or a new game it can't handle. Until that happens I'm sticking with it. Also means there might be more options by the time I do.

im in australia but in the same boat i have a gtx 980ti asus Poseidon water cooled. I was going to sell but on ebay the gtx 980ti has dropped to $800 AUD i paid $1400 only 6 months ago. If you are a mad VR gamer then go for it but if you just play regular games hold off. I bet the gtx 1080 is only about 25% faster than the ti. Plus in 6 months time the prices will drop especially once Amd release their cards. Also i dare say they may work out how to use sli in VR properly then grab another gtx 980ti.
