Replace Verizon router with something secure?

I have fiber service from Verizon in New York. They didn't use the Ethernet jack of the fiber box (side question: why not?) but provided a cable modem / router that connects to the same coax that runs to my TV boxes.

The Actiontec MI424WR device they provided does not seem to have HNAP - when I navigate to 192.168.1.1/HNAP1/ there is nothing there, ditto for using the web-facing IP address of the device. But when I talked to customer service at Verizon they knew my SSID and WPA2 passwords, which were not the default.

So two questions. First, what kind of consumer device can I get to replace their router, that won't spam my passwords all over the web? And second, purely for my edification, when protocol is running over the coax from the fiber box to this router? Same as if I had cable Internet?

Thanks in advance.

It runs moca but there is much discussion if you can actually replace it.

The easiest solution would be to turn off the wireless in their box and move your wireless connection to another router running as a AP. To them everything would appear as a wired connection. Who knows what bad things verizon is up to....att just recently admitted on their new gigpower uverse they do deep packet inspection so they can send you better ads via email but if you pay extra they would still collect the information just not use it.

Well, that does conceal my wireless from them and achieve one of my goals, but I don't want them to be able to see anything on my primary modem / router. Or is that impossible since they own the wires? I would ideally like to keep them from having any control or access on my side, but my bytes do go through them, after all.

(but I use a VPN service)

Yes, I am paranoid.

i searched for a while for something non verizon to use but could not find anything anywhere that gave a modem/router that was compatible with the fios service. i am not versed in protocol and all that but figured if there was anything i could use i would find info on it somewhere. i spent a couple months looking around and sadly never found a positive answer 🙁

i have access to non-public sites that i assumed would provide the answer as they tend to favor non-conventional uses of hardware (i'll leave it at that) but even those sources were unable to offer any non-verizon solutions.

i'd love to use something else myself but it seems like it is not possible for now. (or if it is possible, folks are guarding that info very well)

Can you ask them to activate the ethernet port and you can use any router. My brother had Fios at one time pretty much the only way to completely get rid of their router is to not get tv from them. It seems the set top boxes uses moca to talk to this router so they can get internet access.

I am not sure if you can run both the ethernet port for your router and their router for the set top boxes at the same time. I know when they started making excuses my brother told them to just cancel the tv.

Yeah, I'd like to know something like this as well. I have the HF modem/router, and I would like to turn it OFF as a router and make it be just a modem. I currently have a much better router plugged into it via ethernet and am using it as an access point. I would prefer to use the second router as a router ... with the verizon modem as a modem only. Not sure if this is possible--

any idea?
