Question Replaced modem with new one, still getting slow speeds

Per my ISP (Spectrum), I am supposed to be getting 300 MBP/s on my connection. Yet right now Speedtest only tells me that I am getting 30 MBPs. So after contacting Spectrum, they told me that I needed to replace my outdated modem. So I did, and now it appears that the connection is getting worse, not better. Is there a better way to test my connection speeds than the Ookla Speed Test? Or is it an underlying issue like my router / switch setup? Would I need to buy a new router to get the 300 MBPs that I am paying for on my monthly statement?

If its all systems in the house, then it is "probably" the modem/router.

Try one laptop, wired directly to the router.
If you still only get 30 mbps (speedtest.net), then it is the router, or somewhere upstream.

OK I will try that. I have a router - it's an older TP Link router, and a range extender (Netgear EX6200) because the range of my router can only go so far. Would that be diminishing my transfer rates?

The range extender, absolutely. Those greatly diminish performance. It is trying to send data in both directions at once. Add to that the overall wifi issue.

Reduce the testing environment to the fewest devices possible. A laptop, Cat5e directly to the router. See what happens.

Yeah I tried to do that, but hooking the ethernet cable from my modem directly into my laptop, I couldn't get Windows 10 to recognize the ethernet connection instead of the Wifi.

OK, so not THAT old.

That should give greater than 30mbps in speedtest.

Yeah but I should be getting 300 MBP/s. That's what I have been trying to figure out. Getting 30MBP/s is 1/10th of the connection that I'm paying for. I'm getting all kinds of dropped connections and lost data errors and I'm trying to get to the bottom of what could possibly be causing it. I'm sure part of it is the pandemic and everyone's online but I don't think that would be affecting my personal connection at all.
