OK Hi again! New issue, and I am hoping someone has an answer. I have an older Dell (*Optiplex 745) and I replaced the ATI 1300Pro GC with a new GeForce 210. I downloaded the latest driver (*from the nVidia tech in India, nice guy). So I have the current driver.

Sadly my system does not seem to want to play well with this new card. What would render in 20 min's with my ATI card, now takes an hour?!

This is so much slower then my ATI1300pro rendered! Perhaps I need to set up the card a bit differently? Roll back the drivers? Set the Precision controls differently? Now my puter makes this odd "clunking" noise as it renders as well!? Never did that either.

Any ideas out there? Is this because it was part of the del system and I need to go to the Dell site and update the Bios? Any thoughts at all???

Pentium 4
Win XP Pro
32 bit
4 GBs Ram
305 watt power supply

Your help is so very much appreciated!

Hey
So as far as the system goes, the i7/X58/ triple channel memory is overkill for your needs. Definitely like the idea of going the core i5/ dual channel route.

One thing you may wish to consider is the Phenom II X6. It would be very good for your line of work and the multi-threaded type of applications you use. The 1050T is $180, that's a lot of processing power for under 200.

I also like the gt240, I've just used that GPU for a build for my niece and my sister. They have gaming pc's, but its a solid recommendation at 80 bucks. I don't know if Dell offers the AMD X6 cpu, but I think its something to consider. Of course I certainly don't want to confuse you further, and I'm sure a core i5 would suit you fine.

You didn't offend me in anyway! I like that pic :) It's just that not everyone understands it and I would like it to be my avatar :)

A few of those PCs have good graphics cards for gaming, but they are from ATI, so it's not NVIDIA and it won't have CUDA. They are still good graphics cards though.

This one is the out of those 6:

This one comes second:

I just did some research and found out that if you are only using CS2 or CS3 then the GPU doesn't matter at all. But if you are using CS4 or CS5 then you would be happy to have a better graphics card. If you will be using CS2, get the 2nd option, if CS5 - get the 1st option :)

If you want to keep it simple then just look at the GT430 as there are plenty of LP options unlike the GT240. I have been looking at the EVGA GT430 due to it's small size and is single slot. It will provide a massive boost in Cuda apps such as the Mercury Playback engine in CS5

😀 I am glad Mantas! Check you e-mail for all viewing friendly Av's!!!

Thank you as well buzznut!!! As I look at things I might as well get something newer in a computer now, if one of these is good enough, I am all for it! BTW, Could you elaborate on overkill? Because if left to Dell or other enities, I bet I would get put into something I don't really need... :pt1cable: I'm so confused! :heink:

Thank you too nforce4max! I did decide to go without CS5ext. I don't do animations as of yet. And I do excellent postwork in CS2... Plus I can put that $300.00 refund towards a better system! But don't stop giving me advice!!! :ouch: Cause I am absorbing all info like a sponge! :sol:

Ok so core i7 and the X58 motherboards with triple channel memory are top o the line products aimed at gamers and enthusiasts. You needn't concern yourself with details but these systems are way more expensive and over the top in terms of hardware for your purposes. Hence, overkill in terms of hardware and expense.

The core i5 and dual channel memory are midrange products. Same can be said for AMD X4 and X6 CPU's, they have plenty of horsepower for productivity, in fact they would also do well for a gaming system. I am no expert on the applications you're using, but CUDA and mulitcore CPU's like the quad cores and X6 processors are capable of running several applications at once, or threads within a single application. Multitasking is what these CPU's do best, and for applications that use more than 2 cores such as rendering apps, 3d apps, and audio/video/photo editing-more cores will allow you to do more work faster. CUDA will allow the software to use the GPU and its many cores and parallel processing to take some of the burden off of the CPU-also to make things faster.

nVidia envisions the future of computing moving toward this parallel processing that GPU's do very well. I actually wish AMD were doing more in this arena, you can bet in the future they will certainly try to move toward some General purpose GPU computing (GPGPU).
However AMD is mainly concerned with being competitive with Intel. Right now the CPU makers are moving toward integrating GPU on their CPU dies. This makes sense from the perspective that most general PC's do not require dedicated graphics, so why build a motherboard with integrated graphics when it can be included in the CPU at a lower cost? Also this type of design means you could have the same chip for a desktop or mobile platform, reducing the overall number of different CPU's in your lineup.

For the foreseeable future, (next couple of years anyway) dedicated graphics will still be used and will help move some of the visual type calculations to the gpu. They will still be better at parallel processing until CPU makers change their architectures, which is still evolving currently.

This may be mostly spurious information, but you did ask for it! 😀

$300 can build you a cheap system if you do the work your self and believe me it is easy. Every one here is typical all Intel with a few sprinkles of AMD in the mix, Intel will get you a lot of raw performance but it is expensive so I suggest AMD. AMD cpus often have a lot of bandwidth with the rest of the system and have much better options when it comes to choice of boards. I could go on but I'll wait to see if you want to take that rout.

Hi Everyone! I conked out in front of the TV last nite and missed the last few posts... I have to work today til 5pm my time (*PST/USA) But I will be on shortly before New Years!

BTW....

Happy New Years to all!!! :bounce:
