I have a Asus Vivobook 17 X712JA laptop with a non backlit keyboard that i replaced with a backlit version from asus-accessories.com . There was a slot on the motherboard for the backlight ribbon cable to go into so i put it in. I tried re-installing the drivers for the keyboard but it still cannot turn on. What else should I try?

Check if the cable is facing in the right direction.
Also if you are using linux you may need to add some kernel parameters to the grub configuration...

Can i ask how did you connected the keyboard to the plastic cover of the laptop?
Did you used soldering gun, hot glue gun or did you bought a whole plastic cover with the keyboard already attached on it? I'm having some problems with that described here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/replacing-the-keyboard-of-a-laptop.3800208/
