My GeForce 4600 got damaged and I need to replace it. Anybody know a similar card that will be compatible with my existing slot (AGP 4x)? I've read reviews on dozens of cards, but I still don't know what will definitely work in my pc. 🙁

NEVER GET A 6200 AGP IT IS THE WORST CARD ON THIS PLANET!!!!!!!!!!!

IT SUCKS IT SUCKS IT SUCKS

seriously a ti4200 is probably faster than the 6200. the 6200 is GARBAGE

and not all of them unlock. i had one from xfx for agp and it wouldnt unlock. it was tne nv41 core. it sucked, it was the worst card ever. you couldnt even overclock it without it freezing up your system

just get a 6800, looks like you can scoop it for less than $150 and its 10 times the card a 6200 will ever be.

yes it will work.

What are the specs of your computer? That would help to know which card might match up. There might be little reason to bet a 6800 if you have a 1G processor.

yah scroll up

any cardthat can work in 8x can work in 4x as well
thats how they were designed

unles they specifically say otherwise, but i dont think any cards were produced like this (maybe one but i cant remember)

but yah, back on bashing the 6200. you would get faster framerates if you stuck a jar of mayonaise in your computer and hooked up the video plug right into the mayo

My pc is a P4 2.8 GHz, 512 ram. The 4600 worked great, until one of the capacitors got broken off it. Now it works only in ordinary graphics mode. So really I just want to replace it with something similar; I'd buy another 4600 if they were still on the market :!:

If you are happy with your PC, any 16 pipe video card will work well. Such as a X800XT or 6800GT.
Actually the 4600 is really low/slow, you may be be happy with a 9800Pro or 6600GT. Maybe even a 9600Pro.

As others say, avoid tubocache.

Now if you want to play modern games, high framerates, and upgradability, then you need new everything. Wait a few months for that.

yeah I just ordered a 6800GS on tiger for $179USD it would work for you depends on how much you want to spend lol I got it becouse alot of people are having some good luck unlocking the extra 4 pipes and shader units  !!!!

Edit: BTW Tom Baker was my favorite Dr !

Edit Edit: Hmmm although the new one isnt bad at all (well I think its the new one ?) Sci Fi Channel is picking it up here in the states now... before I was watching it on PBS lol

I have the same issue...I'm not quite ready to make the jump into PCI express land, and have a 5 ...almost 6 year old system:

Asus A7V-266E
1G (2x 512) Corsair Value ram
Athlon XP 1900+
Segate (dunno model) 20 Gb drive (C: )
Maxtor 60GB 5400 rpm drive (D: ) (dunno model number)
ATI Radeon 9600 SE Gold edition (actually forget if its the 128 or 256 mb version)

Things that I need to immediately replace are:
Video card, C: drive, DVD player (switch to a dvd burner dual layer)

I've been following along quietly in many threads, so I've been versed on the NEC DVD burner, which seems to be the way to go atm, and the harddrive can be replaced with the older Raptor IDE version, unless anyone has better suggestions.

I dont OC anything, never felt the need to burn my stuff up for a measly 5 -10 fps...when there are other options available.

I play WoW and only WoW. I am an addict (I almost posted in the wow addict thread too). I have no intention on playing Oblivion or anyhting that graphically challenging for quite sometime (when I build my new machine perhaps in the fall). I discovered that the SE in 9600 SE stands for "Suckeee" as that describes the card to a t, however I was poor as hell when I bought it, and it was all I could get.

I am not poor at this moment, budget isnt my primary concern. I know I should replace the whole system, but I think I want to wait for the new lines to come out, then make a move.

So all that being told, I really need advice as to a really nice AGP 4x/8x card. I have no preference between ATI or Nvidia, I think they both have some awesome products on the market, but these are the only two chipset manufacturers that I would like to buy from. I am sure some of you might tell me to toss my machine, or give me other upgrade options, which I do appreciate, as I have seen many very technically knowledgable people posting here, but I really just need the video card advice for now.

Thanks in advance!!

As others say, avoid tubocache.

I believe Turbocache/hypermemory are PCIe solutions only as they use the bi-directional features of the PCI express bus.

In AGP, there's no turbocache/hypermemory to worry about...

A 6800 GS or X800 GTO would be good buys in the AGP arena, if you don't have that much to spend an X1600 or 6600 GT would be good, both are better than a 4600.

alanoco666,

If you really want a replacement ti4600, you can get one on eBay for ~$40. Some of them even puport to be "new".

Spending $40 on a ti4600 is not worth it. I would reccomend just getting a vanilla 6600, a 6600GT, x800GTo etc. Something cheap but infinitely faster then your ti4600.

Also you should consider getting another stick of 512 ram if you intend on playing any modern games.

BigBuckinChicken,

I helped a friend upgrade a system similar to yours (except he had a ti4600) to a 6600GT AGP. It was a pretty good performance increase and allowed him to play Battlefield 2 (albeit on pretty low settings). You can pick one of those up used for about $100. They aren't a very good deal new.
I'm happy with the $200 I spent on my BFG 6800GS, but I've also heard good things about the X800GTO which you can get on NewEgg now for $160.

I don't think $40 for a ti4600 on eBay is a good deal, either. I just thought I'd offer up the advice since he said he would buy a new one if it was still available. :)

Cheers guys,

I'm gonna go for a 6800, will see what I can find on ebay. Will probably get the extra 512 ram as well.

Thanx for all the info.

advice: since you're using 2 sticks of RAM on this machine, adding a third will drop command time to 2T - this is an immediate 10% drop in performance on such a chipset (Via KT266/A if I'm not mistaken).

Remove the existing modules and put 2x512 Mb in your rig if you can find a pair cheaper than a single 1GB stick. If you get value DDR3200, you can force the timings to 2-2-2-5, 1T - that's a 20-25% performance boost compared to 3-3-3-8, 2T. If you make sure your RAM and FSB clock are synchronous, your PC's gonna fly (I made a Duron 950 play Doom3 nicely in 800x600 with this kind of trick).

I mentioned the 6200 AGP w/out Turbocache, because I saw somewhere most of them could be unlocked to 6600 level.

@Datman
true: if I post an answer to the original poster, I usually use the very last post to reply. If I answer someone else, I'll usually cite them at the top of my post - just like I did now.

However the context of my previous post was clear enough - or so I thought. Sorry if it misled you.
