It's not fast. Kinda like doing a complete scan on the drive + formatting. The actual amount of time depends on the drive. I'd run it overnight, if you don't want to sit and stare at the screen. Then it'll be ready to partition and format in the morning.
By the way, these new Maxtor D740X drives are killer! The quietest IDE drives I've ever installed, and fast as blue blazes. MUCH faster than the 75GB GXPs I've got in the other system, and cooler, too. A nice combination with WinXP.
They don't even look like a Maxtor, anymore. They look like Quantum drives with a different brand name.
If the IBM doesn't work out ... you know what to do. (Well, if it was me, anyway!) Get a second replacement, stick that sucker on Ebay, and grab up a Maxtor.
