My aging s775 motherboard died a while back and I am now in the process of replacing it with a new am4 board.

Question is how do I go about installing the board with my Windows 10 install with contains completely chipset drivers and architecture? Isn't Windows 10 upgrade licensed to the original motherboard?
Do I have to buy a retail copy of the os?
I would really like to retain the current installation as I havent done a recent backup. Thanks.

Solution
Did you use a Microsoft Account to login to win 10? There is a small chance that you can fresh install win 10 on new motherboard and then follow the instructions here to reactivate licence on it: Reactivating win 10 on new PC

What I would do is , download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

change boot order in BIOS so USB is first, hdd second
boot from installer
follow this guide: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

when you reach the screen asking for licence, click "I don't have a key" and win 10 will continue to install

once win 10 instalkled, follow the steps in link above. if they don't work, there is a number on bottom of page they...

once win 10 instalkled, follow the steps in link above. if they don't work, there is a number on bottom of page they direct you to that will be a contact number for MS. If you have the licence of Win 10 or the OS you upgraded from or the email address you registered with MS, they may move the licence onto new motherboard if you explain what you did.

Solution
saving data might require you to put hdd into another PC and copy stuff off as only other thought is use a linux live USB on the motherbaoprd set up before fresh installing win 10 to copy files off it. Try making this on another PC: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

You can contact Microsoft and ask them to move your old Windows 10 license to the new hardware on their live support.
I did it the other week with my new hardware
