Replacing my PSU/GPU

Multiple questions. Because I haven't done this on a pre manufacturered PC before. But im going to be upgrading my GPU and i need another PSU to fit it. I wanted to know if this was possible. My brother says no but everywhere else shows no reason not to. Its a stock Gateway (I'm aware it's an abomination). I need a 400w+ to go in it. Is this possible and what will it take. Thank you. And please forgive me for my stupidity on the subject I'm just used to custom builds.

Gateways are abominations. 'Nuff said.

Time to break out the ruler and start measuring dimensions for length, width, depth, etc. Does the bolt pattern in the back fit a standard ATX or SFX power supply? Does the motherboard use standard ATX connections, or are they proprietary? You'll have to look very closely and examine to make sure you don't short or burn out anything.

If you can give a model number, it might ease the selection (if any) process along. Some prefab models will allow for it, some will have proprietary mounting. And even in models that have a standard ATX mount, there may still be proprietary connectors to the motherboard (looking directly at you Dell).

It is what it is, and you have what you have. Depending on what you can work with the fact that its a Gateway may not be a problem. We shall find out one way or another.

Ok here's some specs. I just realized as far as screws. And telling proprietary from atx, I just realized I forgot how to tell the difference. I was told proprietary connections on my PSU. Here's the specs:

Computer model: DX4885
Mfg. On November 23rd 2013


PSU dimensions:
5 1/2" deep
3 1/2" thick
6" wide
Footnotes: mfg by FPS GROUP INC. and says designed for Acer.

Yeah should be possible. Infact if you get a low power model, you may not have to even upgrade your PSU. A few models only require a 300w PSU. Mileage will vary depending on how honest of a rating the 300w PSU you already have has.

The cards that don't need an external power source tend to be pretty short, but I'd measure how much room you have for a card before buying one just to be sure.

Oh. I never even said why I was doing this. It runs Battlefield 3 ok and payday 2 okay. But I wanted to stop the battlefield lag and be able to play GTA V. That was my goal with this rig

Well from my research thus far, itll work. Or get me started at least. Which has me super stoked. Better battlefield 3. Payday two. And a couple other games. Which is gonna be amazing for me. Because I already have GTA V on PS4 but my friends moved to computer. That and this upgrade is 2 years overdue
