I doubt it is as bad as they say. Also if the report claims the yields are in single digits, then what should the yields be? I doubt the conspiracy theories that AMD is faking this just to see what the 580 can do so they can optimize the final product. That doesn't make much sense to me (at least to fake terrible yields). This is pretty interesting though. Keep us posted.

512 cores and can be OC'd too! [:mousemonkey]

Hey! Where did you get that from ?

The Release date says Nov 09, 2010

That is... Tomorrow! (At least where I am, GMT Europe)

I'm in London which last time I checked was also in Europe. So I assume you haven't seen some of the benchmark numbers then?

AMD don't let us down damn it, if you end up late to the party NVIDIA gets to have it's way with the GTX 580 pricing for the holidays. You think I'd want to pay for an upgrade with the prices NVIDIA likes to set?

Thanks! I think I haven't seen this particular one yet.

According to my speculative math, and taking into consideration the graph you posted, then the new Cayman would do around 51.9 fps. But given that the scaling for the GTX 580 compared to the GTX 480 is not as good as the scaling going from the GTX 470 to the GTX 480, it's also possible that the scaling on the AMD is also not as good. So maybe around 50fps.

I would laugh out loud if my speculative math ends up being right hehehe.

I hope AMD figures out a way to get high enough manufacturing yields. I want that firesale! The way prices are dropping, I might be able to get an HD 5850 for $130! Actually, I'd be happier with a GTX 470 for $130.

Considering the GTX 470 hit $205 on Newegg last week, who knows where crazy firesale Black Friday prices with rebates will land!

i doubt amd is having problems with the cayman gpu's.
its a matter of market position, amd is losing market share to intel on the cpu side, the bulldozer line wont be out for awhile and the overall next six months of profit on the gpu side are important to them.

amd still has a production advantage and design advantage over nvidia, just because nvidia releases an updated card sooner than most expected all of a sudden amd's original timeline is falling behind?

poppycock.

[citation][nom]elysium2k7[/nom]Isnt it ironic, dont ya think? Wonder what the fanboys will holler this time. Im sure every argument that had last year against nvidia will be flipped for in AMD's favor.[/citation]
No... you'd be surprised what they can come up with.

[citation][nom]rmse17[/nom]What exactly is your meaning of "overkill"? Cause it has been a while since I saw the nominal 100fps that I used to get in HL and CS. Is there a video card in existence that will play Crysis, GTA4, SupCom, or even Star Craft 2 at 100fps using the "standard" 1080p resolution with max settings? No, there isn't. We aren't even starting to approach a single monitor "overkill" video cards.[/citation]
That whole paragraph is speaking within the context of memory. The first sentence in the paragraph refers to the high memory capacities of the upcoming cards, so I would assume he's still referring to memory when he says "overkill" in the following sentence.

lol... geez, are we really having this much trouble understanding what he's trying to say?

[citation][nom]sykozis[/nom]Before announcing a delay...why not get actual proof? Too busy being fanboyish towards nVidia?[/citation]
...he says while inadvertently admitting his own fanboyism.

The review was taken down, I didn't get to read it. Oh well, it will be back up tomorrow morning, that's for sure!

WTF!!! Is it me or is their a problem here. AMD started with 40nm way before NVidia did. And once again TSMC is producing shitty yeild on a process that should of matured by now (aka months ago). AMD shouldn't have this problem. If I was AMD I would have been using Global Foundary since they were spun off. Lastly this sound like a "HELPING HAND" from TSMC to NVidia, both CEOs are close. AMD(5870)and NVidia(480) yields where around the same quantities (AS close they can get due to size diffs), the last I heard. AMD STOP USING TSMC, GF can do a better job. And the CEO isn't close friends to NVidia!!!

dowsire-

it doesnt work like you think, TSMC does manufacture the chips but AMD/Nvidia have way more to do with it then you think. Its their engineers who come up with the design and contents of the silicon. This includes the fundamental levels of the silicon makeup even type of transistors. IF Tsmc didnt make the silicon as AMD engineers designed then they would be responsible. The problem is that sometimes things will not function as it was theorized which is always a chance anyone takes when attempting a change in design. Nvidia and AMD consistently check each batch of silicon and even attempted small minute changes in the mix in order to mature the silicon. This is all on them not tsmc who only produce the silicon to AMDs/nvidias design. There will always be surprises and major changes increase the likelihood. There are multitudes of ways and materials to get the same product. The end user will never see whats in the mix. Many times different transistors (less or more leaky) are swapped to try to improve power draw. This is why we see lower Watt chips come over the lifetime of a design. Every change has a tradeoff so often the changes will be subtle as to not accidentally end up effecting performance. This is happening all the time, very common, and engineers are all over the results of every silicon wafer. No way someone could get away with sabotage. If AMD is having is having issue then they made some changes that didnt work out like they thought. Thats about the just of it. It happens no matter what experiences they have with 40nm, when you change certain aspects you are taking a risk in results. If you are too cocky you could end up fudging the whole thing up. But really, you cant predict the results only probabilities which is al there is to go on.

Can you hear that? It's SemiAccurate calling you back. They're short on noobs and Demerjian has grown lonesome in the absence of his bed partner. Go home and satisfy him quick, before he throws another fit of fabricated Nvidia bashing.

Ocre - thanks for the well articulated response, although I don't think Dowsire's comment was worth the time and effort. An obvious AMD fanboy trollin it up with the ignorance gained from his daily expeditions to illegitimate news sources.
