Agreed. I think people need to start realizing, while Linux is a great OS, the thing it lacks is business productivity applications that are mainstream. I think it is a good thing that MS may produce Office for Linux, because then other software companies may start taking Linux seriously enough that they'll support it and once Linux becomes more mainstream for the consumer it'll pick up steam (no pun intended).

 
I see this as little more than a hedge against Surface and Windows RT. If MS can't be successful in the tablet business with its own platform, they don't want their big money makers to be locked out of the space.

MS Office is critical to their bottom line. Vastly more than XBox, even. They can't afford to be wrong-footed, here. For something like that, it's prudent to invest in fallback strategies, and doesn't necessarily signify any strategic shift... yet.
