[citation][nom]stm1185[/nom]Because making pixels 5-6 times smaller is easier?[/citation]

Think about it... a 30ft boat cost more than a 20ft boat. Even if they have the same engine.
Yes, a larger piece of glass drives up costs of material, handling, storage, shipping etc.
also, the demand for a 30" 2560x1600 display is much lower than for a small tablet. So the volume savings do not kick in either.

[citation][nom]jgutz2006[/nom]Apple owns the patent for any resolution of: 2560 x 1600 so Royalties will be paid to everyone who attempts to use a resolution equal or greater than this![/citation]

As f#$% up as our patent system is, I doubt that you can patent a specific resolution.

When do we get those 3840*2160 23" desktop screens... We are waiting... or 27" if 23 is too mcuh to ask!
But yeah tablets are running ahead of desktop and notebook. Holy bat ingredible!

[citation][nom]livebriand[/nom]Who cares about these ultra duper high resolutions? All I want is a matte display! Man, I find 1920x1080 is sharp enough for a 23" screen, so 2560x1600 on a 10" or so one is just absurd. And useless.[/citation]

You'd be right if all you do is look at wepages and nudie pics. But believe it or not, these things are used a lot by professionals too.
Engineers use it to view technical drawings with fine detail. I use it to review flight plans and maps when flying. And a crisp display that shows you details without jaggies is much easier to read and use than a low res screen. Kinda like a 6 cylinder engine. If you only drove 4 bangers you will feel it is a waste of resources to have '6'... until you get to drive one 🙂

[citation][nom]jgutz2006[/nom]Manufacturers need ways to differentiate themselves in the android market as there are SO many devices that are basically the same with a few minor differences between one another. Also why not have the absolutely best picture possible, I'm personally waiting for a 5" to 5.5" tablet/phone hybrid device, something sized like the samsung galaxy player, maybe just a touch larger would satisfy my needs for both devices[/citation]
erm... Galaxy note? I have one it's 5.3 inch and awesome!

2560x1600 have a proper name already - WQXGA. Retina is just crapples way of saying to the sheeps that its something "cewl" and a must have although i bet the eyes cant actually distinguish pixels at that res and tiny screen size.

i guess to game at that res you'd probably want to use the scalar so you can render at smaller res! I don't even think that my 5770 can do adequately at that res!

Yes, I know that the expectations of appearances on the two form factors are different, but still, that's a lot of pixels.

Android tablets are still relegated to obscurity (compared to the iPad) and having a higher res screen isn't going to change that. It'll just be a slightly better looking tablet that looks like it was purchased at Walgreens (up by the counter next to the Altoids). You know, the kind of thing that grandmas buy because their heart's in the right place but they don't know what they're buying. Or something you'd see on a home shopping network.

It's sort of like having a package of Hydrox cookies (Android) instead of Oreo's (Apple).

(Thumbs down if anything even resembling a criticism of Android hurts your feelings)

And we won't be able to buy them until the end of summer.

I hate the MWC announcements. They get you all excited so you want to buy them ASAP...June rolls around and nothing. Then September finally and they trickle out.
I'm talking about the Samsung Galaxy II last year....the LG Optimus Black/3D, etc.

If you can't them into stores in a month, don't bother announcing them 😛

the screen will def look sharper. and for those that say you don't need it and you won't see a diff, you will. tablets are held closer to your eyes than a monitor or even a television, so yeah.

Woah, this might be the first mainstream product to finally have a higher resolution than my old 2048x1536 CRT monitor from 13 years ago....

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom]I use a 30' Panel at this res and I can almost fit 3 web pages side by side on it and still read text on it but its tiny, I cant imagine this res on a 11' screen alot of people wont be able to read anything on it, the icons will be the size of a pea.[/citation]

It's very distressing to me that someone with so little understanding has a screen so much better than mine.

[citation][nom]stm1185[/nom]I cant get a 27 inch monitor with 2560x1440 res for under $850 but you can get an "11 tablet with a 2560x1600 screen for probably $500. WTF LCD PANEL PEOPLE, GET ON THAT![/citation]
I can't see individual pixels on my 23" 1920x1080 monitor unless I get really really close to it (and it's a Dell 'UltraSharp' series too), let alone 2560x1600 on a 10" tablet...

[citation][nom]jiyung[/nom]It'll need a very good GPU, right?[/citation]

Only if you wanted to play certain games; which are better played on a regular PC with multiple screens and surround sound anyway 🙂

i bet Apple has patented putting higher than HD resolutions on screens for each possible thing that can have a screen because they think they are so smart for coming up with that idea.

[citation][nom]archngaming[/nom]Longer answer: The point is to have an extremely high ppi so images look as good as possible. Just because no one can afford manufacturing that ppi on a full sized monitor (yet) doesn't me we shouldn't have it on a smaller tablet screen. Short answer: Progress.[/citation]

please tell me you're joking the PPI on a 27" of that resolution is much much less than the PPI of a 11" tablet if any resolution (PPI = Pixels per inch) so a 27" monitor of that resolution must be cheaper because it has a much less PPI

[citation][nom]ahlkid1213[/nom]Anyone else sensing another Apple vs. Samsung lawsuit next year?[/citation]
I bet Apple is going to patent the 2560 x 1600 resolution with an extremely broad patent to use it as an ammunition.

[citation][nom]jgutz2006[/nom]Apple owns the patent for any resolution of: 2560 x 1600 so Royalties will be paid to everyone who attempts to use a resolution equal or greater than this![/citation]
are you serious because 2650x1600 has been here many years ago and it wasn't first made by apple

it is a standard resolution like 1080P or 720P
