This is a prudent move. While SMIC is not ready for 7nm now, they should not put all their eggs in TSMC given US is slapping random restrictions on them.

Surely that’s good for TSMC especially in the short terms with the massive order or consoles coming soon

Both PS5 and XBOX Series X uses 7nm SOCs, also most upcoming mobile SOCs will be on the 7N/7N+ or even newer 5nm process. So I don't see how this benefits TSMC in any way in the short term. 14nm is still the breadwinner for any fab at the moment due to its maturity.
