XP is fine if all you do is surf the net and use word. For game developers on the other hand, they need to completely kill off XP and not support dx9 ever again. The computers that still use XP are incapable of running newer games so there is absolutely no reason to continue supporting it. None.

XP isn't holding anyone back, people are holding back on their own. Everyones needs and expectations are different with operating systems, when people have the need and desire they will upgrade. I don't believe stopping support or haulting improvements to an OS. is the proper way to kill an operating system. Over time Windows 7 should do just fine, it's already sold a bazzillion copies.

We would've seen Windows XP die a whole lot faster if we hadn't had this recession. It's caused buyers to be in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mode. That, and two words: Legacy Software. Why would companies spend big bucks for new computers and Windows 7 if they were forced to use XPM, anyway?

I use XP. If the upgrades and features were worthy of being a new operating system then why did they have to change how the interface looked. I feel insulted. They should have started charging for service packs. Or include the option to use the XP GUI.

If u kill Xp too fast, people just to LINUX.

WIN 7 64bit
If u want >4GB RAM, Proc >2 cores & so call ready for future software & games DX10,11

Win Xp 32bit
WIth =< 3GB Ram, Proc 1,2or 3 cores. Play WOW, Starcraft 2, Office, Facebook, E-mail, YouTube. I see no reason to upgrade.
Xbox 360 is still DX9

I m waiting for Win 8 lol

Win 7 is not a must! The vast (yes VAST) majority of normal PC users are served just fine with XP, pentium 4 + onboard graphics etc. Honestly, you tech junkies at Tom's get carried away sometimes.

Even I still rock my XP till now despite having Win7 on another HDD.

I was running XP until January, I run all the new games. It's not just grandmas that haven't upgraded, I know several gamers that skipped Vista.

Not likely, they'll just keep using XP without support, most people don't actually take advantage of the support anyway so they won't even notice if MS cuts off updates.

[citation][nom]compfreak93[/nom]Wait for Win7 SP1 and then companies and schools will start upgrading.[/citation]

I'm expecting a 10% jump by the end of the year, but that's just a number pulled out of my ass.

Don't forget Win 2000 and Win 9x. As surprising as it may seem there are still people running these.

Use the tool that works best for you. I don't believe we should just "kill off" XP for the sake of getting rid of it. If XP is the right tool for the job then upgrading to Windows 7 is simply wasting money. I dare say Microsoft will have the same issue with XP as they did IE6.

The paper mill I worked at a few years back still had a machine running 95, the software for the equipment it was hooked up to didn't support anything better so they just took it off the network and left 95 on it. Don't know what they'll do when the computer dies.

The reason XP is holding on so well is mainly it has a higher usability than win7. Why MS moved and change things about in win7 is beyond me, they have made many things take that much more time to do. One question for you all, has anyone been able to create a file in "C:\". They have also totally f--ked up Windows Explorer. MS stop trying to copy MAC if I wanted that I'd buy a bloody MAC!

I have a dual boot setup with xp and 7. I still play all games on xp as its just faster dx10-11 dont make enough difference for me to notice when playing fps I just dont care what the grass looks like. windows 7 is much better for media and general mucking about on the net.

I still use WinXP on both my laptop (2007) and brand new desktop even though I have 7 Ultimate on both. I just prefer the interface of XP more...much quicker for power users than all the noob features of 7 like Favorites, Library, searching, etc.

From a work perspective, I really wish MS would kill all support for XP and force companies to go to Windows 7. This is getting annoying.

Very few PC users need more than 3GB's of RAM which means they only need a 32bit OS. XP is still the best 32bit OS so its common sense really. It could take about 2 years before a large percent of the PC population is forced to 64bit. I'm on XP and there are no games or application software requiring more than my 2GB's of RAM. Microsoft has made the RAM limit the reason for upgrade and its going to be a bumpy ride.

Interesting to note between XP, Vista & 7, the total figure is 96% for the USA, but only 92.1% for Europe, but that uptake of 7 is higher for 7 in Europe.
I read this as people were getting pretty tired of Windows XP for a while and went Open-source/Linux/Apple more readily in Europe than in the USA, but when an actual good Microsoft replacement came out they did exactly the same and followed a product that actually delivered.
Sure.
You can say that MS unreasonably tries to push its product at point-of-sale on pre-installed systems, and the higher overall Windows usage in the USA would indicate that could be true, but in Europe they dont have the same high-pressure sales methods but Windows 7 is more popular in an environment where non-Windows products have a higher uptake.
Digest that for a while, Windows 7 FTW.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Most people that upgrade thier systems constantly are gaming enthusiasts.

The problem is that old equipment and software is all the vast majority of people really need. Outside of high end gaming and specialty software, a XP pc with a P4 cpu with Office 2003 and IE8 is just fine (just make sure you don't surf for porn and your anti-virus is up to date). Most people don't need a Corei cpu with 8 gigs of ram running a 64 bit OS to check email, run Office and surf the web. When I was a kid people kept and used electronics for 10 - 20 years and often only replaced them when the device broke. As long as the product does what you want/need it to do, there is nothing wrong with keeping it.

Things are looking interesting in Australia (I live over here). XP is going down relatively fast, 7 is edging out Vista, Linux is at pretty much nothing and unfortunately, OS X is around 12%...
