Requirements for multiple monitors?

There's a lot of older posts mentioning that SLI/crossfire will be needed to run multiple monitors for gaming. Given that GPUs are getting more powerful, how many GPUs will be needed to run respectively 2 or 3 monitors, in 1080p gaming? I will be using a GTX 980.

I wouldn't game with two monitors, because the bezel is in the middle, especailly with FPS games. If you have 3, you can use one GPU. I was playing COD, GTA V, Watch Dogs 2 on three screens with my GTX 1060 6GB. Just know that NVIDIA Surround it does "stretch" out the peripheral screens.

yes, one oltrawide is what most people looks for now

also sli or crossfire is not a perfect situation, alot of games doesn't uspport it so you end running all the monitors form one gpu and the other does nothing, so avoid dual gpu situations always

for two monitors at 1080p, that 980 should be more than capable but i would buy 1 ultrawide, will give you almost the same experience with only one power cable, one data cable and one single monitor in my desk, less heat and less power consumption, simpler to use and configure

An ultrawide monitor is not an option, as I play a lot of MOBA games besides the FPS and racing games. This means that when I'm playing my MOBAs I'll have to stick to 1 monitor. However, I thought that several GPUs were favoured when running multiple monitors, so that each GPU could "take care" of their own individual monitor?

Again, you get one GPU do to 3 screens. If you want to play across 3, it's ok. If you just need 1 and use the others for monitoring, that's ok too. Again, I was able to get 5760x1080 just using 1 card.

Okay, thanks for the help.
May I ask what card you were using for your 5760x1080 set-up?

a single card can easily run three screens

mobas are usually cpu bound, so a gtx 980 may be enough

expect to lower settings quite a bit to get playable fps in most newer games
