Researchers Build a Quantum System Without Cooling

2 seconds for storage? Hah, that's far better than some modern DRAM tech, so it's much more viable than it might seem at first glance if this technique can be practical to implement. If they really can stretch it into hours, then it's even better and theoretically more power efficient because it shouldn't need a refresh as often.

no.

In the 1940's with the first practical Computer ENIAC, It could add or subtract 5000 times a second, a thousand times faster than any other machine. Today a modern Smartphone can do a million times that. And were almost hitting the brick wall with Silicon Chips..

Science never seize to amaze me..

A couple of qubits stored for the astonishing time of 2". Now it's a piece of cake, just add 8 orders of magnitude to storage time and 9 to storage capacity and we'll start talking seriously about computers.

Well the cooling and vacuum systems were the bulkiest parts of the existing setup. If this pans out then it'd be great. And to actually get an increase of storage time at room temperature is amazing!

5000 x 1000000 = 5000000000

if addition is single instruction that would mean that cell phones use CPU capable of running at 5GHz. close but not quite there yet, even desktops are clocked under 5GHz

;)

You forgot part of the equation.
Modern processore are able to issue and complete 3 or 4 instructions in one clock cycle. This is for a single core processor. 2,4,6,8 ,12 core processors bring tthis number down even farther.

Simply put, you are wrong.

Clock speed is not the only factor determining compute power. Architecture of the chip has to be taken into account.

Place two chips together, same clock speed, and one outperforms the other, due to the Architecture of the chip.

And to be truthfull, even an Intel 4004 built in 1971, which is way more powerfull than the ENIAC by several factors, is minute in performance compared to a modern dual core smartphone.

Intel 4004 92kIPS (Or 92160 Instructions per second)
Qualcom Crait Dual Core 9.900 MIPS ( Or 12205670440 instructions per second)

So here is a Dual Core Mobile Chip running 12 BILLION instructions per minute at 1.5GHZ Way more than your incorrectly calculated 5 Billion Instructions linked to "5GHZ"

[citation][nom]jamessneed[/nom]Let me rephrase that for you. It's facts and knowledge that try to belittle the Bible.[/citation]
Last time I researched the 'sciences' of creation/Inteligent Design vs Evolution a few years ago I thought they were both full of crap. Evolution has huge gaping holes in it's various competing theories that are simply untestable, while young earth creationists try to rely solely on biblical text to fill in their holes instead of seeing if physical reality somehow lines up with what the bible says. And the worst part is that both camps are full of ignorant douche-bags who spread hate and ignorance while claiming to be enlightened. The only real science these days are coming form corporations; It seems a trend that any 'science' funded via a hot-button issue is merely fundraising for padding research budgets.

Since we're talking quantum computing, to answer your question... it already has.

Evolution has huge amount of evidence and just because real science can not explain everything about the world does not mean it is all false. Natural selection is a very easy concept to understand and a proven concept. Just look at the artificial selection of dogs and horses where people can pick traits of animals to bred them to look very different and behave very differently. Natural selection works the same way but the traits of animals are passed on which successful reproduces and passes on the traits needed for survival the best. If the offspring of that animal has bad traits it will be less successful and will not pass on its DNA as successful if at all. Science is always searching for answering and never just accepts anything as fact. Intelligent design is based purely on being correct with the bible and ignores all real science.

did you asshats really just turn an article about the future of computing into anti-religion bs? FFS, grow up.

Please compare a 3.0 GHz Ivy Bridge to a 3.0 GHz "dual" core HT Pentium 4 in CPU performance.

. . . and it is right now. And also, it never will. All at the same time! Brain hurt? It should.

GHz and operations aka performance are two very different things...

A while ago I read about a quantum computer error correction algorithm.
The algorithm needed a bit longer than what was possible (in the microseconds or milliseconds range).
I'm looking forward to be able to use quantum computers.

Typical quantum systems cannot be operated at room temperature.
Stop confusing very specific implementation limitation details with limitations of the concept themselves.
