Hey guys,

I have a BENQ G2400WDL monitor and an NVIDIA GTX 275 video card on my system. This morning I turned on the computer and found that my resolution was really low for some strange reason. So I did the usual. Uninstall monitor, uninstall video card and drivers, re install everything and no go. And then I plugged the monitor into my second DVI port on the video card and boom. Back to normal. Anyone know what the problem might be? So far it looks like maybe the video card has issues, but I'm still just hoping that maybe it's got something to do with a driver or something software related.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Solution
The best way to do this is to divide and conquer. Isolate the (suspect) device and test it with other parts that are known to work. So if you want to test the monitor, try it on a different computer (or computers). If you want to test the GPU, try a few different GPUs with the same monitor.

If the GPU is causing the problems, it will not work with a few monitors (but might work fine with a limited few). You just need 1 other monitor to see if the GPU's 1st DVI output is still good. If it has the same problem on at least another monitor, you can probably count on the GPU as being faulty or going faulty.

Otherwise, the same for the monitor.
Because when I use HDMI, my monitor can sometimes be a little temperamental and the screen flickers if it is turned on at the "wrong time" and then I have to power it on and off a few times till it displays properly.

(lol after reading what I just wrote, I guess it does sound like the monitor is dying and I need a new one).

I had a few BenQ monitors before, they ALL eventually died... Not that what I experienced is a reliable way to predict anything though.

It could be repairable in the right hands, or a new one (try a different brand) ?

I'm not sure if it is worth repairing. Another thing that happened was that my power button has gotten permanently depressed. It's gone right into the hole. Luckily it comes on by default when you plug it in and my spike strip has individual power switches.

So yeah I guess it is time to come to terms with the fact that the monitor is kinda busted then. My main problem is finding a nicely priced monitor that is 24" with the 1920x1200 resolution with a matte screen. I have a very specific monitor that I like. This one served me well for over 3 years and the picture is great. I also managed to score it for $100 on Craigslist in great condition when I originally got it. The first problem that came up was the power button thing. And that was very recent. And then this stuff.

Hmm, okay. I know a lot of BenQ monitors uses some form of VA panels (MVA, PVA), and those are pretty good, some would argue 2nd in line to IPS panels in some ways. I have read that back in the day, they used a lot of junior engineers to design their monitor electronics, and that has resulted in quite a lot of failures (my models included).

Anyways, that aside, try a nice ASUS or HP or Dell ? I have heard and read great things about all of them, and try an IPS ? I lean towards HP or Dell for IPS monitors (and absolutely NOTHING else).

Thanks for the recommendations! I will be on the lookout for some monitors now. I do like Dell. I've used their monitors before and they have always looked really good. Let's see what I can find on my limited budget.

And thanks again so much for all the help! I appreciate you coming back to this thread to continue to help me!

Cheers

You are very welcome! Have a good one and enjoy the new monitor. Check the Toms news links here for good deals from time to time on coupons for Dell monitors, like this one:

These come up from time to time.
