Resolution VS Real output

I had a hard time coming up with a title for this thread, because in reality I dont actually know what my question is, but I will try to ask it in the best way I can.

I have recently been playing some old school games (Old Harry potter games, Assassins creed, and half life 1) and they all seem to start in very low, 4:3 resolutions, I of course instantly go into the settings and change it to match my display.

My issue is, when they are in 800x600 they look really, really bad, yet without touching a graphics setting, just changing the resolution the game suddenly looks way better (within reason being an old game).

Now, dont get me wrong I understand a little about resolution, just not as much as id like.

For instance, when do you hit a point where simply changing the resolution will just stretch textures? I would have thought, if the textures can be good at 1080p, if you shrink them down to a smaller resolution they would appear better and more full of detail, why is this not the case?

Not just 1080p though, I have compared game's with a friend, he has a 2k monitor and using exactly the same graphic settings, only difference being the resolution the game looks that much better (I imagine result's would be the same with 4k but I dont have access to a 4k monitor.

I guess my main question is, if you play a game (for arguments sake let's take something like crysis 3) and play it at 1080p ultra settings everything maxed, if there was a display capable of 400k (I know it's a large comparison) but would the game look that much better? Or would you hit a sweet spot in the middle (200k) where the texture's just dont look nice any more?

I tried to write this in the best, unprocessed way that I could, so my initial questions were not shrouded in making a pretty post 😛

Any advice will be appreciated and hopefully I can once and for all understand fully what the difference/relationship between textures, resolution and display sizes are.
 
I think you have it backwards.

The higher the resolution the better the texture will look.

The textures don't stretch based on the display resolution. Textures also have a resolution tajt are mapped to a 3d object.

At higher display resolution you can fit more pixels into an area for detail making it appear more crisp.

I hope that helps a bit and I am not an authority onthe subject . This is just my understanding of this subject.
 


But wouldnt you reach a max of the texure size vs the resolution where the texture is smaller than the resolution you're running it at? That was my initial understanding but every time I have used the same game on the 2k monitor it still looks better at higher resolution, even with the older games/textures.
