retail windows 8.1 trial software

I'm building a gaming pc. All the parts came today but the windows 8.1 key and cd won't be here until Monday and I would like to use the pc this weekend. Is there a way to install a trial version then input the cd key when I get it?

I'm afraid that the only Windows 8.1 trial I know of is the 90-day Enterprise edition. While it's possible to get the full version ISO from Microsoft, it requires a valid serial key. So, basically, you're screwed. Sorry.

Is it possible to get it from somewhere else or is that illegal?

Nope, no other way to get it without paying money. We don't discuss piracy on these forums, so scratch any inkling in that direction.
