It will be used mainly as a video editing platform, most likely on adobe premiere elements, but will also be used as the everyday computer. Wanted to build it to be somewhat future-proof, and the initial budget was around 1500, so I am slightly over right now. I have already picked up the cpu, case, and hdds, as well as the motherboard (all from the local micro center), however, the motherboard was an openbox and it was missing a few things and I found thermalpaste on the cpu pins so I will be returning that and going with a new x99-pro unless you guys have some other suggestions. I was looking at the x99-pro for its wifi and it seems to be one of the more reliable x99 boards. For memory, it was between this and the Crucial Ballistix Sport, but I was leaning toward these for the lower latency. The video card is between a gtx960 and 970 right now, and I am also unsure on which direction to go for the cpu cooler (CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo vs Noctua NH-D15 vs an AIO liquid cooler).

Thanks for the help!

you are wasting money for not needed things. wasting on mobo , cooling , harddisks , for what ?

usb 3.1 ? add it later ...

300$ motherboard ? why for what ? you dont need it you are not using 3xSLI

I would get this

and then add things later.

let me ask you a Q

which is more important ?

Liquid cooling and WD black hd with GTX 970

or normal cooling for now and one harddisk and GTX 980 ti ???

do yhou think what ever you overclock you will beat GTX 980 ti ? lol

this is my advice to you , get this

$100 more only.

I definitely like the idea of going with the 212 evo, but had concerns with clearance of ram and had heard that a lot of people switch to liquid anyways. I am very open to going air cooled, nut just wanted to be sure that everything would fit and my temperatures would stay in check.

For the hdd, I am planning on running two in raid1 just because I like to be safe on any potential data loss, plus I was able to grab those two on sale so price wasn't bad.

As far as gpu, I was comparing the gtx 960 and 970 since I won't be doing much if any gaming and from what I've read, the video editing and rendering is more CPU intensive, with either of those cards providing good support.

I do have a question on the motherboard - I'm really looking for something that will be as reliable as possible. I realize there's never a guarantee, but with this being my first build I was leaning towards the Asus boards because of that. The pro made it onto my list because of the wifi which I may need depending where in my house I set up. There is a lot of room for savings there, with some of the entry level MSi boards in the low 200s as well, but I really want to know of the reliability.

I realize I may be wrong in some of my assumptions, so I really do appreciate the input and advice from you guys, so keep 'em coming! Thanks!

not much gaming .. hmm sorry about that.

are you going to render 3D ?

you should focus then on fast harddisks and more ram ..

Did some rejiggering, this is an alternative.

Seems like the 212 evo is the go-to cooler here so I'll likely switch to that.

Also, since putting this together last night I've realized that the psu I selected is not good, so I'll definitely look into the one you suggested.

Can you tell me a little more about why the recommendation on the ASRock? Seems like a very good value for an x99 board, just curious on the reliability and ease of setup vs something like the Asus.

Also, I am leaning towards starting off with 16GB of ram (4x4), which would leave me room to expand in the future if necessary. Any reason I should consider the G.Skill over the Corsair or Crucial?

The GTX 970 is another one that keeps popping up and is the gpu I'm also leaning towards, even though the 960 is slightly more budget friendly haha

Thanks!

Hello ,

1- dont pick up Asrock extreme 4 , it is low X99 chipset in Asrock motherboards.

get at least Xtrerm 6 , or Fatality , or Oc Formula ..

here is the difference , look at the cooling heatsinks for example :

the extreme 4

the Extreme 6

1148670.jpg

the Formula

all asrock motherboards come with 3 years warranty , and the formula comes with 5 years warranty , so dont worry .

2- since you are video editing , then get a BlueRay writer . they are cheap today and the media is also cheap. and they come 25/50/100GB disks. Pioneer makes the best writers.

3- get 128MB cache 7200 harddisks .. the new ones come with 128MB cache while older come with 64 ... better and faster than the WD black.

those are good ones

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st2000vn0001

want raid 1 get two of them

and come with 5 years warranty. and are 2TB each

4- stay with Fractal design case it is nice one.

5- get water cooling if you dont want expensive GPU , I removed extras so you can get GTX 980 ti .. if not you can put water cooling .

6- I dont know about your needs , but 32G is allways the way to go... for editing

thats all
