RIDICULOUS Problem? 7800GS too cool temperature issue

Ok, I don't want to hijack this thread but I seem to be having the exact same issue with my newly purchased BFG 7800GS OC card, so I thought I would keep it to the same topic.

I was wondering if I had some sort of bottle neck in my system or if I need the drivers from the link provided by the OP.

Here are the specs of my computer that I built about 2 years ago:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz w/HT tech. (Prescott socket 478)
Intel 865GLC MOBO
2 x 1GB DDR400 RAM
WD HDD (100GB EIDE 7200RPM 8MB Cache)
550W +12V@ 18A PSU that came with case.

Are any of these a probable cause for my card not working? I know that it is recommended to have a PSU of +12V@ 20A MINIMUM, but I see that people run cards under the recommended requirements with a great deal of success.

Here is what happens with the new card. I mainly play Battlefield 2 and I tried this card on all HIGH settings as was claimed to be capable of doing and my screen was choppy as hell whenever I got in a spot where there was a lot of action taking place. I would seriously get pwned anytime I would come in CQC which was really annoying to say the least lol. So I lowered the settings to MEDIUM and the same thing (for the most part) happened. I then tried all LOW settings with a slightly better resolution than I used with my ATI Radeon 9600 PRO and it seemed to work ok or was somewhat playable. In all honety my ATI card performed better than the BFG and I know that this is not at all what should be happening.

I wanted to check here with the experts to see what you think about my system (I know it is not the best but I had to keep the cost low when I built it) and if any of the components might be causing the low performance of the card. I was going to RMA the card and get my $200 back and build another computer but I have decided to wait until the price drops to about $250 for the C2D E6600 later this year and build a new machine. I came across this post yesterday and it may have saved me from having to return/sell this card which I really don't want to do at the moment. I haven't had time to install the drivers from the link given by the OP but I will do so when I get home later today. Thanks iin advance for any help you guys are able to give me.

I initially installed the drivers from the disk that came with the card. Then I went to BFG's website and saw there was a driver update (version 93.71) so I removed the old drivers (that came with the CD), restarted my computer and installed the 93.71 from BFG's website. That didn't work either. At that point I was ready to sell the card until I thought I may have found the cause of the problem when I read this topic the other day. I removed the 93.71 drivers and I installed the driver version Forceware 92.91 from here: http://www.driverheavendownloads.net/zeropoint.htm

I tried to play BF2 and the game is still choppy. I don't know what the deal is. I thought that I completely removed the old ATI drivers and the nVIDIA ones as well, as I don't see them in the "Add/Remove Programs" section, which I have heard may be causing my problem. Is there something that I could use to make sure that ALL drivers have been successfully removed?

Oh yeah, I just installed ATI tool and when I was trying to overclock my card...the highest I got was 38 degrees C and managed to get the Core frequency to 525MHz. I went back to the default settings and at idle it is running at 29 degrees C.

If you're talking about the 7800GS, 38C is the 'magic temperature' for the cold bug. Over 38C it will run fine, at 38 or below it will usually run at around 10% of full speed.

So how can I raise the temp of the GPU? I guess I could over clock but by how much? I am more worried about overclocking the memory because my computer crashed when I did so. What would a good way to "stabilize the temp" above 38 degrees be?

I find that this is a completely assanine problem and it has me leaning towards ATI in my future purchases. nVIDIA REALLY needs to do something about this. I just spent an hour on the phone with a BFG tech guy and the only good info I found out was that the 84.21 drivers are supposed to be the "most stable" for this card...

once u start playin games ur temp will go over 38. have u tried installin the lastest agp drivers an chipset drivers??. download a thing called 3dmark03 and run it let it do the cpu tests as well then post back ur score that way i can tell if its performing right.

The proper solution would be for BFG to get you a BIOS fix. Before I got one from XFX, I used to run the X29.exe demo (really basic old OpenGL demo from 3Dlabs) for a few minutes after booting up; that warmed up the chip and once the temperature got over 38C it would usually stay there.

I am wondering if it actually IS the BIOS. I have been doing a lot of reading on this card and I went through 14 pages on a topic last night. XFX offered a BIOS fix that seemes to work. Before that some people used nibitor 2.8 and disabled the "temperature monitoring" or something like that and they claimed that it worked. Then they flashed with nvflash 5.25. But what did this actually do? Did it only cause the card to run hotter and once it got to 38 degrees C it works perfectly fine? Or did it work fine at say 30 degrees C and was a problem with the card "underclocking" at the wrong time?

I don't feel that I should have to warm up this card for ten minutes before I play a game. I actually tried this last night though and I had my card @ 39 degrees. I played BF2 but it was still choppy...I DID notice a slight increase in performance but nothing major. I managed to get my card to a whole 42 degrees for a half a minute maybe and noticed no improvement. I used ATI tool to monitor the temp. I had an average fps of around 390 within a minute. The core clock seemed to jump from the 275MHz to 400MHz @ 33 degrees or so. This has me believing that it is NOT the BIOS.

Maybe it is my power supply. 550W +12V @18A. MINIMUM recommended is 400W +12V @ 20A. It is just a cheap PSU that came with my case. Not sure if $75 is worth the risk of trying to see if that is my problem or not.

I'm using the 93.71 drivers. At the moment my card is overclocked to 470/1458. When I play Oblivion for a few minutes, the temp reaches 40C and everything is great. You can tell when the temp gets to 40C, it's like a turbo kicks in. I have an older system-P4 3.0, D875PBZ, 4x512 PC3200, and 420W PSU. My case has five fans, so it is reasonably cool. The card stays below 50C in Oblivion.
Unless your card is staying below 40C all the time, you have issues other than the "Cold Bug".

I think you guys are gradually helping me figure out my problem. I am leaning to the power supply as the source of this problem more and more. My card idles at 30 degrees (right now according to ATI tool). I open ATI tool and click "show 3D view" and my card jumps from 30 degrees RIGHT to 33 degrees. I get an average fps of JUST under 400 (395ish) right off the bat. Within under a minute the card goes to 35 degrees C and still hold steady @400 fps. A half minute later the card dips to 30 degrees C and the fps drop pretty sharply to 375. Then card gradually raises temp back up to 35 degrees and the fps climb as well back to 390ish. Then another temp decline to 30 with decreasing fps and back again to eleveated fps with an increase in temp. This roller coaster process keeps repeating itself. Power supply insufficient? I am thinking the card is not getting enough juice? Could this be the cause? Someone said that the card should have a beeping noise to indicate that the card doesn't have enough power. Is this true?

Or did it work fine at say 30 degrees C and was a problem with the card "underclocking" at the wrong time?

My card works fine when it's been idling at 32C now. I'm not sure what the real cause of the problem is, but I'm sure that something is underclocking it at the wrong temperature.

When I run ATI tool and overclock I can get an average fps of 450's. The temp goes up to 39 during the overclocking. When I finished (Core @500MHz and Memory @ 326 MHz) and ran the "show 3D view" again the temp drops back to low 30's pretty fast. WHY???

I have the BFG 7800GS

Video BIOS version - 5.71.22.21.16
ForceWare Version - 93.71
Core Speed - 468
Mem Speed - 1.38
(Idling and writing this as of 1:14PM CST 37 -38C)

VESA BIOS Information
Vendor: Nvidia Corporation
Product: G71 Board p492h2
Version: Chip Rev

Computer Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
1GB Mushkin Ram
BFG 7800GS
120GB IDE 7200 Seagate HDD
9 fans (including CPU & PSU fans)
500W Ultra PSU

Playing Q4 1280x1024 with everything on high (2x AA) and using the ingame FPS counter i get a 60 - 50fps.... and with some levels with a lot of stuff it dropped to around 40fps, alt+tab out out various times and temps are at 38 - 40C

Playing CoD2 1280x1024 with everything on high (2x AA) and using the ingame FPS counter i was getting around 40 - 30fps, temps were around 40 - 41C

BF2142 1280x960 everything on Med playing Conquest mode and game runs smooth, lots of action and arty it drops a lot. Don't know FPS though. And in Titan mode, plays fairly smooth on the ground, but as soon as i get onto the titan it's usually a slide show, with the occasional bump.
