Ripping DVDs with Multiple External DVD Drives

Hi there,

So I'm looking to rip my entire DVD collection to ISO format. Because I have quite a few DVDs I was hoping to be able hook up multiple DVD drives to considerably speed things along. After many hours of googling I have a few theories of how this would (hopefully) be possible, but haven't been able to confirm any of them for sure.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm working with, my computer is a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina. 2.7 GHz Intel i7, 16 GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1GB, and a 500GB internal SSD.

I'm hoping to connect 3-5 DVD drives that will be ripping DVDs to ISO simultaneously (will most likely be using Nero), and ripping them to either my internal SSD or an external USB 3.0 HDD (or a couple of USB 3.0 HDDs on a powered hub if that helps write speeds).

The three scenarios/options that I've come up with (that I have no idea if they'll even begin to work or not) are:

Option #1: Have 3-5 external USB DVD drives connected to a powered USB 3.0 hub. Hopefully this will be enough as this is the easiest/cheapest option. Not sure if this would allow each DVD drive to be recognized individually though. Also not sure if attaching multiple drives would allow each drive to receive enough power from the hub.

Option #2: Use this SATA port multiplier to USB 3.0 by Addonics and attach 3-5 SATA DVD drives to the port multiplier, and then connect that to computer via USB:

There is however some fine print that seems to suggest only HDDs can be accessed via the port multiplier's USB, and if I were to connect Optical Drives I would need to connect the port multiplier to my computer via SATA, which it does not have. Not sure if I misunderstood that though.

Option #3: Use this 3 Bay USB 3.0 DVD Drive Tower by Addonics:

This would be the most expensive of the three options and would limit me to 3 drives.

So those are the three possible solutions I've come up with, with absolutely no idea if they are even the least bit feasible. Any and all input would be appreciated, as I hit the wall on google a while back. Thanks!

what popatim said, interesting idea though

plus i don't think Nero will let you copy copyright protected disks. I may have mis-read your intentions but in case, MakeMKV will do a better job, but it obviously as the name implies converts to MKV format

then i'd use Nero to covert to iso, if MKV wouldn't serve

Yes, you can!

Use multiple instance of Imgburn software
I would not recommend you to use USB3.0 nor USB2.0, unless it supports UASP protocol

A method the high recommend: eSATA PM bridge like SiI-3726, S3PMS3P, eS3PMS3S
Using e-SATA PCIe that supports PM like
http://www.amazon.com/e-SATAIII-support-Multiplier-works-Windows/dp/B00DJ9SM9A
This set up will take advantage of NCQ and other enhance feature of SATA bus.
Since it will be a random write, you do need decent random write speed, if your conventional HDD can not handle it, use SSD as a temporary saving HDD

If you even WANT to burn, then use Alcohol 120 for windows and Drag on for Mac, of course use the hardware

Happy ripping

Wow, this is very helpful! Imgburn looks perfect, unfortunately it looks like it's PC only and I'm working with a Mac. Do you know if there's a Mac equivalent program that could do simultaneous rips? After some research it looks like Roxio Toast 14 might have that capability (it's a feature that's briefly mentioned but not really expanded on), but the reviews for the software are pretty terrible.

If I were to set up Bootcamp for Windows would the extra resources required for that significantly slow the multiple ripping processes?

And thanks for the link! Gotta be honest though, SATA is an area that I am especially ignorant in. Also, my laptop only has USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt imports. Is there a version of that hardware that connects to the computer via USB 3.0? How dissimilar is that hardware from the SATA to USB 3.0 connector I listed above (http://www.addonics.com/products/ad5ehpmeu3.php)?

Sorry for all the questions, and thank you again!

I agree, but unfortunately (at least though my google results) that seems like a bit of a dead end. Haven't found a company that rents out multi-DVD ripping set ups (at least not for less than buying the gear I've listed). And as far as sending in the DVDs to have them ripped, there are some services overseas that offer this but the only companies in the US that do so require that the DVD be your own original content per copyright law.

You certainly can set up Bootcamp for Windows ijn Mac and use ImgBurn to rip ISO. I do know Addonics has some issue with their USB adapter supporting port multiplier technology

AMAZON use to carry this u3eSATA
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DCCMII?tag=onigi-20

But I think DATOptic pulls it off from Amazon, but look at the rating form the users
